This is the question on social media these days: do you really need a skincare fridge?

Like any cosmetic, there are pros and cons to this one. Below we give you the information you need to decide for yourself.

What is a skincare refrigerator?

The skincare refrigerator is a fairly new beauty product that was created to store some of your skincare and cosmetic items at cooler temperatures.

You may already be keeping some of your products in your regular refrigerator. The idea is the same, except there are some key differences between a regular fridge and a skin care fridge.

First, the temperature. A regular refrigerator will operate between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit, because that’s the temperature that will keep most foods fresh and prevent spoilage for as long as possible.

A skincare refrigerator will run slightly warmer, usually between 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit. This helps keep certain products cool without making them so cold that the solution is damaged or the texture is changed.

Secondly, skincare refrigerators are a lot smaller than regular refrigerators. They are meant to be stored in your bathroom or bedroom so that you have your products at hand when you need them.

Finally, skincare refrigerators come with several additional features such as mirrors, shelves, and even Bluetooth connectivity and built-in speakers. They also come in a variety of colors and styles, so you can choose what best suits your lifestyle.

Can’t I just use my regular fridge for my skin care products?

The short answer is: yes, you can. But you may not be happy about it.

Because a regular refrigerator is colder than a skincare refrigerator, some of your beauty products may harden if you store them there. Others may lose their spreadability or experience discharge.

This is also possible in a skin care refrigerator, but a little less because it is not so cold there.

The regular fridge is normally also in the kitchen, which means you have to go from the bathroom or bedroom to the kitchen to get your products and bring them back when you’re done. Not bad, but not convenient either.

Am I changing myself by not having a skincare fridge?

The truth is that all beauty products are made to be kept at room temperature. That means manufacturers expect you to store them in your room or bathroom cabinet. They design them to work well under those conditions.

You’ve probably been following your skincare routine for years without cooling down any of your products, and that’s fine. Unless it’s specifically stated on the product label to be refrigerated, it’s usually no less potent and you can safely use it if it’s kept at room temperature.

On the other hand, some ingredients do indeed lose their potency when exposed to heat or light. In particular, fragile ingredients, such as antioxidants and vitamins, can last longer if stored at lower temperatures.

If you live in a warm climate, you may also want to consider a skincare refrigerator, especially for some preservative-free products.

Which products work best in a skincare fridge?

Buying a skin care fridge does not means you put all your beauty products in it. That’s because some products don’t do well when stored at lower temperatures. Others may last longer or feel more comfortable when you apply them.

Products that work well in a skincare fridge

Vitamin C Serums

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can aid in collagen repair and even skin tone. When exposed to heat and light, it can break down more quickly. A skincare refrigerator can help maintain its effectiveness.

Retinol Products

These are made from vitamin A derivatives, so they too can break down when exposed to heat and light.

ampoules

Ampoules usually contain powerful, more delicate ingredients. Check the label, but they often last longer and remain more effective if stored at lower temperatures.

Eye creams

If you suffer from puffy eyes and dark circles, you may want to keep your eye creams and gels in a skincare refrigerator. This makes them cool as they continue, which can increase their effectiveness.

Beauty masks

Many moisturizing gel masks and sheet masks may feel better if you keep them cool. Just make sure there is no oil in it, as the oil can separate.

Sir

Any misting spray — toner, refresher, etc. — probably feels better when you’re cool. We often recommend refrigerating our Rescue + Relief Spray as the cool temperatures enhance the products natural cooling ability (although it’s not necessary – you can also use it at room temperature). Spray it over your face and body and let it go to remove heat and soothe redness.

Skin care tools

This is where a skincare fridge can really shine. A cool jade roller? So refreshing! Cool face sphere? Delightful!

Think

Most makeup items don’t work well when refrigerated. Foundations can separate and become difficult to distribute. Eyeshadow, blush and bronzer can harden. Mascaras can become almost impossible to work with. Store it at room temperature.

oil based products

Often, products containing oil will separate when stored in the refrigerator. This can damage the texture of your product and make it more difficult to spread. It can also make it harder for your skin to absorb the ingredients. Read your ingredient list before choosing where to store the product.

Clay masks

These are great for oily skin as they can help absorb excess oil and reduce the appearance of pores. However, clay does not do well when refrigerated. The mask can harden, which means that you cannot apply it until you have warmed it up.

Nail polish

These are best kept at room temperature. Cooler temperatures may thicken the solution or cause separation.

Food and drink

You can put these in your skincare fridge, but keep in mind that the temperatures are usually lower than in a regular fridge. Be careful not to spoil your food.

Which skincare fridge is best for you?

If you decide you want to try a skincare refrigerator, keep in mind that there are many options. They run from about $30 to $100 or more for the more premiere models. Estimate how many products you want to store and then check the size. The smaller ones are about 5″ x 5″ x 8″, while the larger ones can be up to 10″ x 21″ x 29″ or more.

You can choose your favorite color, design and additional features. Some have handles if you think you might want a portable option.
