“I really love you guys because they think this is my fancy haircut,” Sofia Richie Grainge confesses from the chandeliered bathroom we’ve all become familiar with through her TikTok. “Because this is my lazy girl haircut.”
Her most recent viral tutorial was devoted to recreating her self-described “slim lazy girl bun— but when you wear it to the Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party… it feels loftier than my version of weekend hair.
Pre-COVID, Grainge shares that her hair didn’t grow past her shoulders because of “all the bleaching, all the dyeing.” It was then that she decided to make a simple switch during the step towards getting her signature look.
“Instead of gel, I decided to start using a regenerative hair mask,” she says, smoothing hair Christophe Robin’s regenerating mask with prickly pear oil through her now waist-hugging lengths, making sure to work into the hair on her nape and ends. “I’m convinced this is the only reason my hair grew so lush during COVID.”
Regenerative hair masks are specially formulated for those who color or chemically treat hair, and are all about undoing damage.
Grainge’s hair stylist Gregory Russell not only approves of this hack, he thinks it’s “genius.”
“You get the same shine and softness as a gel when you use a mask, but you treat your hair well and at the same time with all the nourishing benefits,” says Russell. “For curly or coarse girls, you may need to add mousse around the edges for control.” He loves Pureology’s Style + Protect weightless volume.
