Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the President of Mexico, said this the U.S. Department of Transportation will do that improve the country’s aviation safety assessment.

As reported by Reuters.com, President Lopez Obrador announced this during his routine morning press conference Mexico would be upgraded from Category 2 to Category 1.

“This is good news,” said President Lopez Obrador. “All requirements have been met.”

In 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded Mexico’s rating to Category 2. However, the U.S. agency has been working with civil aviation authorities for more than two years to improve its safety rating.

Regarding President Lopez Obrador’s comments, an FAA spokesperson said that the agency expected the process to be completed in the near future without specifying a precise date. The announcement may be made as early as this week.

LATAM Airlines (LTM.SN) country manager and head of Mexico’s air transport chamber, Diana Olivares, revealed in June that Mexico’s flag carriers have more than $1 billion as a result of the FAA’s decision to downgrade Mexico’s aviation safety rating.

After purchasing the defunct Mexicana de Aviacion for $48 million, the Mexican government announced plans in August to launch a military-run airline. In the same month, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada and WestJet also announced their intention to launch new flights from North America to Cancun and Cozumel.
