American news recently released their findings after collecting data from more than 17,000 people around the world on what the best solo travel destinations were. Participants were asked to complete a survey that included numerous factors, from cultural accessibility to safety.
A beautiful country full of charming mansions, flowing canals and bicycles galore – it’s no surprise that the The Netherlands ended up on the list as one of the best places for solo travel!
Safe for everyone
There is something to be said about a destination being safe for solo travelers, but there is even more to be said when it is considered safe for EVERYONE.
In recent news, Amsterdam has even just launched a skate park that is “a safe haven for LGBTQ and women.” A country that supports safe spaces for all is a country we want to see!
The city skate park welcomes everyone who wants a space to be themselves, meet new people, practice their passion and feel no judgment.
Sensation seekers
If we look a little deeper into the findings, the Netherlands scores a 57.9 in the adventure category. While the country is undoubtedly known for its colorful tulip fields, windmills and vibrant capital, the country also has another side that most people don’t experience.
Surprisingly, the Netherlands has so many options when it comes to adventure activities and things to do. Let’s look at Amsterdam: the city installed the A’DAM lookout swing that sits on top of a 20-story roof!
If you want to see a little more of the country than just the capital, you’re in for a treat. Bungee jumping, hiking, kite surfing and catacombs: there really is no shortage of activities for the thrill seekers.
Did someone say easy transportation?
As a solo traveler, exploring a new country without the means to get around isn’t ideal. Fortunately, the Netherlands takes this hassle off your hands transport.
Once you’ve settled into a specific region or city, the trams and metros are definitely the best way to get around. However, if you are still traveling across the country, it is best to stick to regional trains and buses for longer journeys.
Being a canal center, many cities in the Netherlands also offer transportation by boat or ferry: what better way to see a new destination?
If you’ve read ANYTHING about the Netherlands, I’m sure you’ve heard of the cycling culture here. It is very normal among Dutch people to travel by bicycle.
Whether you’re in a hurry to get to a tour or want to meet friends at the bar, you can expect to see a few hundred bikes along the way. It’s quite easy to rent a bike for a week or day in any city!
Welcoming community
Plus, the Netherlands (particularly Amsterdam) is probably one of the best places in Europe for great hostels. If you want to meet new friends quickly, this is the way to do it!
From party hostels to island accommodations, the Netherlands has something for everyone. Everything is allowed in this progressive country it’s easy for everyone to feel at home!
The Dutch have seen it all and are extremely hospitable to people from all walks of life. After visiting more than 32 countries myself (largely solo), I can say with certainty that I felt least judged in the Netherlands. The locals always greet you with a friendly smile and a wave!
