When we think of ‘tropical paradise’ we often think of the Caribbean and Mexico for their sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. But what if tropical paradise means a shorter flight without the hassle of flying internationally?
Americans looking to explore a group of tropical islands known for their vibrant marine life and warm waters need look no further than the Florida keys! Beautiful all year round, but there is certainly something charming about the islands during the autumn season.
Florida attracts hundreds of travelers from the US every year, and while Key West is a popular option for Americans to visit, did you know that there are also an abundance of picturesque towns in the Keys that offer fewer crowds and breathtaking views?
Affordable flight routes
We’re all looking for cheap flights, and if those flights are direct, it’s a win-win for everyone! JetBlue has announced that they will resume nonstop flights from Boston Logan Airport to Key West International Airport (EYW) on October 29 (and daily nonstop in January).
As a result, Delta will resume winter service from New York’s LaGuardia to EYW this fall, and American Airlines announced their second nonstop flight from DCA to EYW on November 5.
Additionally, Florida offers many affordable flights from various US cities throughout the year. If you want to take a road trip across the country, the possibilities are endless!
The dry season is just around the corner
If you’re looking for 80 degree weather with a little less rain, fall from November to April is the best time to visit the Florida Keys.
With hurricane season coming to an end and the stuffiness in the air dissipating, temperatures this time of year are bearable for most travelers.
Now that schools are starting again this year and families are back to work, there are also fewer crowds these few months compared to the summer. The spring breakers haven’t quite made their way to the coast yet, so get there before they do!
Prime-Time for underwater fun
If you’re planning a trip to the Florida Keys, don’t forget to book some sort of underwater excursion. With some of the best beaches and marine life in the US, it would be a shame not to make a few fishing friends during your trip here.
The best time to snorkel in the Keys is often from October to May, when temperatures are slightly cooler and drier. Try your luck at spotting turtles, barracudas and even the serene manatees.
Exciting accommodations
There is no shortage of great hotels in the Florida Keys for every type of traveler. From adults-only all-inclusives to family-friendly hotels, there are certainly many options.
In the hotel world, an exciting new launch is planned for November 1st in Everglades National Park! The 24 unit Flamingo lodge will feature suite-style rooms with full kitchenettes and epic views.
Sometimes the best part of visiting popular places is finding the lesser-known destinations. Marathon City in the Florida Keys is in the process of transforming Faro Blanco Resort. Less crowds, a view of the lighthouse and an outdoor swimming pool at the harbour: sign up!
Autumn festivals
Sitting poolside or on the beach with a cocktail certainly sounds like an ideal vacation to most, but sometimes it’s exciting to try a few new things. If you want to immerse yourself in Florida culture, look no further than their list of fall activities!
Probably one of the most famous ‘Fantasy party.’ The ten-day event for adults includes the entire shabang: costumes, parades, people around the world and much more celebration.
Think of the Fest as a smaller version of the Brazilian Carnival. Festival goers show up in their craziest outfits, looking to dance, eat and meet new friends! (This year’s event takes place October 20-29 in Key West).
There is so much more to do in the fall! Marine conservation celebrations and family-friendly activities make the Florida Keys an ideal place for everyone. (View all events here).
