You think of Yigal Azrouel and you think of leather. Mainly black leather, cut into oversized bombers, form-fitting mini dresses and rocker girl pants. There’s certainly plenty of it in the Spring 2024 collection, but there’s also been a conscious effort to add relaxed pieces to soften all that edge. “I tried to be very precise, but also very relaxed,” Azrouel said in his newly opened studio and storefront on Grand Street.
A good example is a black suede pajama shirt with short sleeves and white trim, which literally combines a bold material with loungewear. The precision is evident in the gabardine trench coat with a leather mesh cover and a similar knitted and patented mixed media bomber jacket. The colors are also exact, in that there is a clean edit of black, gray and white, with flashes of purple and aqua.
Azrouel offered many knits and matching sets in this collection. The latter were especially interesting in a Japanese denim with copper and silver hardware and a slightly cocoon-like silhouette. The eveningwear is, as always, body conscious, black or revealing, ready for a long night out. One of the coolest options is a white maxi with a U-neck and a super high slit. With an urban Greek goddess vibe, it can be evening wear or a beach dress depending on the styling. Either way, it looks best with a leather jacket.
