In autumn, vibrant colors make spectacular walks more visually impressive – and even casual drives and other daily excursions can feel a lot more exciting.

With such an explosion of color that is not the case or to watch them, but where and when. Not sure where to go? Below we’ve highlighted some of the best fall color spots in New York:

Breakneck ridge

This exciting destination is popular for its proximity to NYC and requires a lot of scrambling. There are multiple routes available, but they are all challenging in the best way.

The trailhead is easy to find in the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, which features an extensive network of trails that, while slightly less rigorous, are just as beautiful.

For the ultimate fall trip, try the Breakneck to Cold Spring route, which takes about four hours and offers mesmerizing views of the Hudson.

Boldt Castle

Visiting Boldt Castle in the fall is a truly enchanting experience. Located on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands region of New York, this beautiful castle is surrounded by a picturesque landscape that transforms into a vibrant tapestry of fall colors during the fall months.

The fresh, cool air enhances the charm of the castle’s architecture and surrounding gardens. Walking through the halls of the castle and exploring its history amidst the golden leaves is a fascinating journey back in time. With fewer visitors compared to the summer months, autumn offers a more serene and intimate experience at Boldt Castle, making it an ideal time to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the castle

Catskill Mountain Railroad

Don’t feel like walking? The Catskill Mountain Railroad is a great alternative and even offers a Fall Foliage Adventure Train. This trip departs from Westbrook Station and takes just over an hour along the Ulster & Delaware Railroad corridor.

There is also a Pumpkin Express Train, which offers all the same great fall views, but with the option to pick out a pumpkin to take home.

Hudson Falls to Putnam Station Drive

There are countless scenic drives worth taking in upstate New York, but this one will definitely be at the top of the list for anyone who enjoys rural farmlands in the fall.

This trip begins in Hudson Falls and hugs the Vermon border as it winds through the Adirondack foothills. Expect to stay on Route 4 until Whitehall, when Route 22 leads to the end of the ride in Putnam Station.

Seneca Lake Wine Trail

Seneca Lake Wine Trail

What could be better than enjoying the autumn view and exploring the region’s delicious wines at the same time? These activities can easily be combined while navigating the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, which includes more than twenty wineries.

It may take some research to determine which locations are the most scenic, but favorites like Atwater Vineyards and the Idol Ridge Winery will always delight with their beautiful fall vistas.

Indian ladder route

The Indian Ladder Trail, a favorite hike in beautiful Thacher State Park, is an overall easy hike, although there are quite a few steps involved near the end. However, these are more than worth it, because they lead to impressive views.

Year-round, this trail is always a wonder, as there are an abundance of fossils embedded in the limestone. This is only half a mile long and is a great option for catching fall colors if time is limited – although Thacher State Park has plenty of other trails that show off fall colors at their best.

Letchworth State Park

This amazing destination has more than earned its nickname as the Grand Canyon of the East. Where it surpasses the real Grand Canyon, however, is with its vibrant colors.

The Gorge Trail is a must, but hiking is certainly not the only option to admire the autumn colors. Cycling and horse riding are always fun, but you can also simply enjoy lunch at the picnic areas.

Wallkill Valley Track Test

While cycling often gives way to walking when the weather clears, exploring on two wheels can still be enjoyable on a warmer day. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is a great candidate if the weather cooperates.

Perfect for a leisurely ride, the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail passes through the amber and gold hues of Shawangunk Ridge. Stretching over twenty miles and passing through towns like Gardiner and Rosendale, this is a year-round opportunity that deserves more recognition during the fall season.

Taughannock Falls

Visiting Taughannock Falls in the autumn season, every nature lover’s dream comes true. Located in Taughannock Falls State Park, New York, this breathtaking natural wonder is even more breathtaking when surrounded by the vibrant fall colors. As you stroll the park’s trails, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the canyon, which is decorated with the striking colors of changing leaves. The waterfall itself, which is 65 meters deep, is a majestic focal point amid this autumn foliage.

The Van Hoevenberg

Try something different and admire the scenery from the thrilling vantage point of a mountain roller coaster. The Van Hoevenberg is a true recreational gem and while there are plenty of ways to view fall colors in this remarkable destination, one of the most memorable options is the Cliffside Coaster.

This is North America’s longest roller coaster, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy the view. Other activities worth trying include cross-country cycling and trail running.

Discover autumn in New York

Fall is one of the most glorious times to explore New York State. From walking to cycling and even by train, there are countless ways to see the beautiful colours, so don’t miss the opportunity to admire the breathtaking scenery.
