Charming neighborhoods, cobblestone streets, harbor views, and quick day trips to beautiful destinations – Boston truly has it all, and one of the best times to visit the historic city is now!
That’s right; While Boston is a winner in all seasons, fall is a magical time in Beantown. The trees begin to change color and the sky becomes clear, creating some of the most picturesque cityscapes in the US
And if Bostonians are one thing, it’s spicy.
The city’s residents are extremely proud of their sporting culture, but they also know how to celebrate a season or two. If you visit in the fall, expect to see pumpkins… everywhere!
Decor well done
If you’re familiar with Boston, then you’ve heard of Beacon Hill, one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods; think: narrow alleys, towering brown stones and decorative sidewalks.
Every year in the autumn, the residents do their utmost during a bending competition. Last year the city saw an entire house inspired by the Harry Potter films, cemeteries and more – it’s truly something not to be missed while you’re here.
Another neighborhood that goes beyond that is South End. Taking a walk down one of the side streets in the fall will make you feel like you’ve taken a day trip to Disney!
Hundreds of tourists come every year to catch a glimpse of the spooky show. One house in particular is known for its… Halloween decor with a political theme when you need a good laugh!
So many day trips
If you’re worried about what to do when you visit a new place, don’t worry. Boston’s prime location on the East Coast makes it easy to take a plethora of day trips from the city.
Short, long, overnight: no matter how much time you spend here, there is always something for you. Boston’s public transportation is well connected to other US states and cities in Massachusetts and is quite easy to navigate for newcomers.
- Tours of less than an hour → If you want to keep it short and simple, there is plenty to see. Take a short boat trip to Provincial citydare to get spooky Salemor hop on the commuter train to Newburyport, Rockport or Gloucester.
- Longer day trips → Rent a car and drive through the Berkshires to see some of the best leaves in the country or stop by New Hampshire for the day. It is even possible to drive there or take the train Cape Cod, and then sail to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard.
Boston knows what Oktoberfest should be like
I did say that Boston was a vibrant city, and fall really brings this out to people. The whole city celebrates Oktoberfest, almost to the same extent as Germans do!
There are more than five celebrations in Boston this year alone. Decorated breweries, people donning lederhosen and dirndls, oompah bands and free-flowing beer: you’re sure to have a good time at one of these!
For a day of family fun, Harvard Square celebrates the legendary Oktoberfest celebration every year with a music parade, sidewalk sales, and an array of food vendors and beer gardens.
Here you will find a link to some of this year’s events!
Beautiful hotels
Would you like to stay directly in the city? Luckily for you, there are plenty of hotels that also offer some of the best views around Boston. Small boutiques overlooking tree-lined streets and luxury towers with rooftop bars: you’ll definitely enjoy spotting greenery.
So I convinced you to stay in Beacon Hill? The freedom is one of the city’s most beautiful hotels with a creepy past. A former prison with a striking lobby, the hotel is located on the edge of Beacon Hill and across from the Charles River – perfect for leaf-gazing!
The city’s latest opening has caused some excitement. The first Raffles Hotel in the US has found its home in Boston! With a sky lounge, spa and speakeasy, Raffles is a new hotspot in the Copley area (aka an oasis near Newbury Street!)

Main location
This one doesn’t need much explanation. As a central hub for travel, flights to Boston are usually quite affordable if you get them early enough!
Flights in October can be found from Chicago to Boston for less than $100 roundtrip, and from San Francisco they are as low as $220 roundtrip. Being one of the busiest times of year in the city, these flight prices are extremely reasonable to visit.
