It’s no secret that Mexico has recently become a favorite destination for travelers and digital nomads alike, and more and more destinations in this fascinating country are emerging as great places to explore and briefly call home.
The southern state of Oaxaca (pronounced wa-ha-ka) is an example of a Mexican destination that was severely underestimated by international travelers but has now exploded in popularity. popularity. The once sleepy Oaxaca was recently named the best city in the world and is now becoming a destination for digital nomads to watch.
From the state capital Oaxaca City to the Pacific Ocean beaches along its 330-mile coastline, there’s a lot to love about this Mexican state, and it’s likely to become even more popular.
Why are digital nomads loving Oaxaca right now? Some reasons include the low cost of living, a lower crime rate than other nearby states, a growing digital nomad community, the fact that it is packed with culture, the underrated beaches and natural landscapes, the good WiFi and co-working spaces, and not not to mention the great food and drink scene.

Here’s why Oaxaca is the next big hotspot for digital nomads:
A growing community
As more and more digital nomads decide to come and see the buzz Oaxaca is receiving, the community is growing and becoming more connected. The capital of Oaxaca City is a popular spot for digital nomads, but those looking for the beach often settle in Puerto Escondido.
With sand-covered streets, delicious food, decent internet, and tons of co-working spaces to log in, this beach town is only becoming more popular with remote workers. And the epic surf density didn’t hurt his case either.
Digital nomads looking for a more authentic and rugged beach atmosphere can visit Chacahua, with its large Afro-Mexican community and fishing village feel. This remote city may be more authentic, but keep in mind that internet and other amenities needed for remote work may be harder to come by here.
Safety
Despite being one of the poorer states in the country, Oaxaca is a safe choice for digital nomads looking to settle in Mexico for a while. Although petty crimes such as pickpocketing do exist, simple precautions can help you prevent them.
Protests can be common here in the capital, and while they are almost always peaceful, as a foreigner you should remember to stay away from them.

A paradise for gourmets
Some call Oaxaca the center of the Mexican culinary scene, and it’s easy to see why. In a country with amazing food like Mexico, you know a place has to be special to take the culinary crown, and Oaxaca is just that.
Thanks to a unique climate at an altitude of one and a half kilometers and a subtropical highland location, things simply become different in this region, and therefore the local flavors are ultimately those that you cannot reproduce anywhere else.
Oaxaca is also considered the birthplace of Mexico’s beloved Mezcal, and more than 90% of the world’s supply comes from here. Don’t miss the chance to taste the local spirits and food, as if I have to tell you twice.

Beaches
The area is home to a mix of eleven major indigenous groups living side by side. And here you can see some of the largest populations of the last remaining diverse indigenous groups in the region.
While the city of Oaxaca is a big draw for digital nomads, the beaches along the Pacific coast are where many remote workers settle for a while. Puerto Escondido, Chacahua, Zipolite, San Agustinillo and Mazunte are all popular choices, and the communities of digital nomads and surfers are growing every month.
While the internet was previously known for being a bit spotty in these cities, it appears to be becoming increasingly reliable as more digital nomads descend on these locations.

Cultural capital
While the country of Mexico has no shortage of culture to enjoy and learn about, the state of Oaxaca with its deep unique cultural traditions offers lessons from a long history. From the colorful buildings lining the streets to the nearby ruins, there is a lot to see.
Oaxaca is officially a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the nearby archaeological settlement of Monte Alban, a must-visit to see some of the Zapotec history.
