Summer is finally over, which means the high season for traveling to Europe is also coming to an end.
In just a few weeks, stronger winds will blow across the Old Continent, and several popular tourist sites will close their doors as they prepare for the colder months ahead.
While a transatlantic trip may sound less appealing to some in colder climates, it’s worth noting that all of Europe will cool down in the near future. In fact, a lot of Southern Europe could stay warm and ensure a perfect off-season getaway.
Be here 4 lesser-known sunny spots in Europe who will enjoy high, summery temperatures this fall and also smaller crowds:
Menton, France
A hidden gem on France’s Côte d’Azur, Menton is the last French town before the border with Italy, and understandably so very multicultural in character.
The pastel-coloured, tightly packed buildings feel more Italian than French, and you might even hear Ligurian dialects on the street.
Either way, Menton is a unique weekend getaway. Sandwiched between two countries, it combines the traditional charm of the Italian Riviera – think a tranquil, fresh lifestyle lemon press and cobblestones – and the unspoken elegance of the French Mediterranean.
Although the local beach is pebbly, which may be a bit off-putting for some, the water is crystal clear and the long promenade is incredibly multicultural to stroll, lined with gelato stalls and artisan workshops and stretching all the way into Italy.
Plus, staying at a 3-star hotel in Menton Old Town will cost you just $76 per night this fall.
Paphos, Cyprus
One of the trendiest holiday resorts in the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, Paphos is known for its warmer weather all year round, long, endless miles of sandy beaches and turquoise-coloured shallow lagoons.
Being geographically in the Middle East – despite being culturally European – Cyprus experiences scorching summers pleasantly warm autumnwith the best time to visit being between August and the end of October when it is not too hot.
If you visit Paphos this autumn you will find less crowded beaches, a more youthful atmosphere as very few families will be on holiday, and affordable beachfront stays, with rates from just $121 for the Queens Bay Hotel on Booking.com this October.
Sanlucar de Barrameda, Spain
Andalusia, an autonomous region within Spain, is the hottest region in all of Europe this fall, with temperatures soaring above 86°F degrees in several cities, but if there’s one beach spot that will make headlines, what about its vibrant nightlife and summer weather, is Sanlucar.
Officially it is called Sanlucar de Barrameda a smaller coastal city on the shores of the Mediterranean Seajust an hour’s drive from Seville, home to an array of different historical sites, including a medieval castle and a charming old town, and a 6km long and 50m wide sandy beach.
Plenty of space for lounging and sunbathing, especially in low season when most holidaymakers are already at home.
With hotel rates as cheap as $64, Sanlucar is one of the most affordable sunny holidays in this part of the world.
Hvar, Croatia
Hvar, a paradise island off the coast of mainland Dalmatia, one of the main ethnic groups that make up the country of Croatia, has recently been dubbed the new ‘Ibiza’, in recognition of its subtropical atmosphere, paradisiacal beaches and emerging resort scene and a debauchery nightlife.
During the tourist season, which lasts from summer to late autumn, guests will find a large number of beach clubs and bars open until the early hours, including the trendiest on the island, Carpe Diem, and the central Veneranda Club, Where techno parties and famous DJ sets.
The cost of accommodation for a week’s stay in Hvar this fall will set you back around $2,000 for a mid-range B&B or hotel room, with overnight rates at the extremely popular Amfora Hvar Grand Beach Resort from just $162.
As a cultural destination, this small island should not be underestimated either, as it is home to one of Croatia’s oldest settlements in Stari Grad and centuries-old historic fortresses that rival those of Dubronvik in beauty.
