After a hugely successful summer, Turkey is enjoying its reputation as an international hotspot that tourists can’t get enough of.
One of the country’s most coveted destinations, Cappadocia, just broke its all-time tourism record. 3,000,000 tourists in the past eight months alone.

For comparison, the previous record was set in 2022, when 2.5 million tourists visited the Turkish region from January to August.
So what’s driving travelers to Cappadocia in record numbers?
Unearthly landscapes and fairytale chimneys
The landscapes in Cappadocia are truly otherworldly, with thousands of soft, cone-shaped rock formations commonly called fairy chimneys.
These stunning natural wonders have been shaped over millions of years by erosion and volcanic activity, resulting in surreal terrain that looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel.

Some even describe the landscape as how they imagine Mars or another neighboring planet to be, because simply nothing else exists on Earth.
Although similarly shaped formations, such as hoodoos, can also be found in other places around the world, the term “fairy chimney” is generally used to refer to the specific shapes and nature of the natural structures found in Cappadocia, Turkey – you can also call it that. -of a kind they are.
If that’s not enough to convince you to plan your next trip here, the formations are further complemented by the ancient cave houses and churches carved into the soft tuff.

The best way to experience the entire surreal landscape of Cappadocia is to embark on one of the many hiking trails in the area; However, make sure you research a route that you are comfortable with.
After all, you won’t have much breath left after seeing the breathtaking views.
Rich historical and cultural heritage
The region where present-day Cappadocia is located is believed to have formed 60 million years agogiving winds, erosion and volcanic eruptions just enough time to form the majestic landscape we can marvel at today.

However, its abundant natural wonders are far from the only historical heritage the region has managed to retain.
Cappadocia has long been a center of civilization and is home to some of history’s best-known societies, including the Hittites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans.
Its wonderfully diverse cultural heritage is reflected in the numerous historical sites found in the area, including rock-hewn churches, unique frescoes and the fascinating underground cities that dot the region.

However, if you’re ever in the area, your first order of business should be a visit to the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s home to everything we’ve talked about so far, and more.
Hot air ballooning over the sky of Cappadocia
When you read the word “Cappadocia,” chances are your thoughts immediately went to the balloon-filled sky you’ve seen in hundreds of Instagram photos.

The reason why the region is so strongly associated with hot air balloons is the fact that both the landscape and weather provide the perfect setting for a serene ride through the Turkish skies.
However, it’s worth noting that Cappadocia will rarely look like the photos you’ve seen online unless you plan your visit carefully enough.
Most balloon flights take place from April to November, when the weather conditions are most favorable.
In July you can experience the beautiful Balloon Fest Cappadocia, a four-day event that honors the region’s esteemed tradition.

During these days the sky is filled with hundreds of balloons creating the breathtaking panorama we have come to expect from Cappadocia, and best of all, the event is completely free!
Unique cave accommodations
One of the features that sets Cappadocia apart from other historical hotspots is the fact that during your sightseeing trips you not only get to see the carved churches and underground cities, but you can also experience staying in a cave hotel or suite. yourself!
The area is filled with charming, unique lodging options that are carved directly into the soft rock, forming the landscape you will look at during your trip.

Make no mistake, the rooms are filled with all the modern amenities you would expect from a hotel, with the added bonus of access to beautiful panoramic terraces.
Culinary delights and local experiences
No trip to Turkey is complete without an overview of local dishes and delicacies.
Regional specialties in Cappadocia include testi kebab, manti and kuru fasulye, which are best followed by a classic Turkish dessert. My first choice would be a pistachio baklava.

You’ll also be pleased to hear that the region has a long wine history, with local producers making a varied range of wines throughout the year, depending on the weather, season and specific location.
If you’re not yet sure what type of wine to buy, I recommend stopping by one of the many wine tastings in the area.
