Starr Hout and Laura Cramer of Apiece Apart looked inside to see what new thing they could add to their line of easy, wearable items for spring. “This was a season of grounding and expansion,” said Hout. “We used a lot of neutrals and really brought out the constructions, playing with pushing shapes and doing a lot of draping in the studio on our wrap dresses and skirts.”
Although their modern collection of basic garments seemed business as usual at first glance, new efforts were made to take their versatile range to the next level. For example, they updated their suit with rich corduroys and linens, and they envision their three-piece suit, in off-white linen, being worn separately. Coats such as the Acacia overcoat have an interesting cocoon-like shape. “Developing our jacket language has been very important to us,” says Cramer. Kinetic knits – in lime green or chartreuse – add a pop of color to an otherwise tranquil setup. “We see colors as medicine,” says Houtt.
The designers also thought about new ways their hero pieces could be styled and mixed and matched. A timeless striped shirt dress was worn as a top, with trousers underneath. “We have been working on different ways to accentuate the female form,” says Hout. This was balanced against more menswear, like a technical cropped bomber jacket that felt like new territory. They also expanded on their recently launched denim, with a pair of their signature twisted seam jeans in summer-ready white.
A wide range of breezy maxi dresses, in floral or geo prints, are designed with beach holidays in mind, as are the lace crochet tops and maxi skirts. “They are foldable and portable,” Cramer said. “You can get off the plane and still look great.”
