In order to have better trained “elite” police officers who focus not only on response but also on prevention, the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic of Benito Juárez, the City Council, and international agencies have given courses for 243 officers in 2023.
Alma Reynoso Zambrano, Cancun City Council Member for Safety, is happy with this the city will have better prepared police officers thanks to courses from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Program for the Prevention and Reduction of Violence (PREVI).
“This year we have already trained 243 police officers and we will soon send another group of about 123 officers. As a result, through coordination and collaboration with USAID, we will have better prepared police officers.” “But it won’t stop there,” she says.
Reynoso remembered all that this is aimed at achieving prevention. Now it’s not so much about retention or response, which is important, but about fighting prevention.
Regarding the courses, she explains that some are given at the Municipal Police Academy and others at the Municipal Secretariat for Citizen Safety and Traffic Facilities.
“This will change in the next courses because with the academy certification, everyone will take the courses at the police academy, we need to strengthen everyone who is in the secretariat,” she acknowledged.
She highlighted that there have been two training sessions so far in 2023, the first group consisted of 120 and the second of 123 officers. “Before sending them to the courses, do strategic planning so as not to neglect the city and train them at the same time,” she added.
