As millions of tourists flock to Europe in search of that perfect autumn city break, the continent’s biggest hotspots are starting to feel a little chaotic and over-commercialized.
Fortunately for those looking to avoid the crowds this fall, some of Europe’s most authentic and engaging experiences lie in its smaller, lesser-known destinations.
According to facts gathered from various surveys and reports released in recent months, these are the best small towns you can visit in Europe right now:
Dubrovnik
Located along the beautiful Dalmatian coast, Dubrovnik is a seriously underrated destination with the kind of idyllic views and soft sandy beaches you’d expect from a much more popular (and expensive) hotspot.
That said, the “Pearl of the Adriatic” is so much more than just a pretty beach town, with a rich history dating back to the 7th century.
Temperatures this time of year are between 12°C and 17°C, which, although low for a sunbath, is perfect for a long day exploring the city’s main attractions, including Fort Lovrijenac. Pile Gate, Sponza Palace and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Don’t forget to explore the well-preserved Baroque buildings, marble streets and old squares that offer a glimpse into Dubrovnik’s medieval past.
There’s no better way to end a day in Dubrovnik than heading to a local eatery and enjoying fresh seafood and a glass of aromatic, locally produced wine.

Portugal’s second largest city sits proudly on the banks of the Douro River and exudes that old-world charm that most travelers try to experience on their European getaway.
Once an overlooked destination by tourists trying to make their way to Lisbon, Porto has now become a vibrant hotspot, loved for its breathtaking views, natural allure and reasonable prices.
The historic Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the region’s most prized attractions.
Here, the colorful, narrow houses on the riverbanks create the kind of picturesque setting that feels like something you’ve read about before but never seen in real life.
However, perhaps the city’s most famous export is its wine. Those looking forward to wine tasting in Porto will enjoy a visit to the famous cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Bruges
Belgium’s best kept secret, Bruges, is a city straight out of a fairy tale.
Between the unique medieval architecture, winding canals and cobbled streets you will feel like you have traveled back a few centuries.
Architecture buffs will have the time of their lives here – Bruges is a treasure trove of Gothic buildings that even gives Barcelona a run for its money.
In particular, the iconic Belfry of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood (located directly opposite each other) are not to be missed.
Once you’ve finished admiring the local architecture, take a well-deserved break and wander through the beautiful little chocolate shops and craft beer pubs of Burges – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
Reykjavík
Of all the destinations on today’s list, Reykjavik is perhaps the best choice for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Between the abundant geothermal hot springs, majestic waterfalls and volcanic landscapes, it’s hard not to feel connected to nature during your stay in the Icelandic capital.
Whether you want to soak in the healing waters of the Blue Lagoon, marvel at the mesmerizing Northern Lights, or take exciting excursions to explore glaciers and volcanoes, Reykjavik is the place to be.
San Sebastián
Although often overshadowed by cities like Barcelona, Madrid and Ibiza, San San Sebastián is a stunning Spanish hotspot whose cultural significance and natural allure deserve much more recognition.
Foodies will absolutely love the Basque city, as you’ll find a remarkably high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants and pintxos bars here, which only serve to showcase the world-class local cuisine.
In addition to its delicious cuisine and exceptional wines, San Sebastián is also known for its beautiful beaches (Concha and Zurriola), an abundance of outdoor activities and idyllic Belle Époque architecture.
