It’s the time of year to make winter travel plans for all types of travelers. Whether it’s a Christmas trip with the whole family or a solo traveler avoiding the family vacation altogether, winter is a great time to see the world.
Digital nomads are always looking for new destinations that perfectly suit their lifestyle. Some of the top destinations for digital nomads happen to have cold winters.
The good news is that there are always sunny days ahead for travelers. There’s a lesser-known destination in Latin America that’s just the place for better weather.
We all know Rio de Janeiro, the vibrant city of Sao Paulo, but what about other Brazilian treasures that are often overlooked?
Welcome to Minas Gerais:
The foodie capital of Brazil
If Minas Gerais is famous, it is the ‘foodie capital of Brazil’. Even celebrity chef and world traveler Anthony Bourdain filmed an episode of it Parts unknown here.
But just because it was on TV doesn’t mean it’s mainstream. Many tourists simply don’t know anything about this beautiful state in Brazil.
Even with its enormous size, it is often overshadowed by Rio and Sao Paulo, both of which are a short flight away or about 8 hours by bus.
Foodies will love satisfying their taste buds with flavors that are hard to find in other parts of the world. Brazilian ingredients tend to spoil during transport, so enjoying authentic cuisine is best experienced in Brazil itself.
As sensational as the region’s local cuisine is, there are many more reasons to visit, especially for digital nomads.
Affordable long-term stays
In addition to the new tourist visa, Brazil does offer one visa for digital nomads. Remote employees can pack their bags knowing they are welcome here.
Rio has become more popular among digital nomads, but Minas Gerais is a great alternative. The capital of this state is Belo Horizonte, a sprawling city surrounded by beautiful rolling hills.
Here’s one of the best places to find cheaper monthly stays Airbnb is between €650 and €750. Many even offer cozy work spaces.
There are also several hostels in the area, but Airbnbs are probably the best value for money.
Endless cafes with reliable WiFi
Belo Horizonte is equipped for a digital nomad takeover; it’s just not on their radar. There are high-quality co-working spaces all over the city, but the charming cafes are hard to miss.
And: have you drunk Brazilian coffee? It’s delicious! Especially in the Lourdes and Savassi neighborhoods you will find trendy cafes, perfect to linger and complete your work assignments.
Many restaurants also welcome remote workers because they are such a foodie destination. Digital nomads can indulge in one of the city’s many must-visit mom-and-pop restaurants while they’re at work.
It’s safe
Some travelers hesitate before heading to a new destination, especially one that’s off the beaten path like Minas Gerais.
The good news is that this region is considered very safe. As in any big city, there are some districts that are rough, and it’s probably best to stay away.
In Belo Horizonte, for example, Mercado Central is the heart of the city and a must-see for anyone who visits.
However, it is probably wise to avoid the city center in the evening, because all walks of life come out when the sun sets.
The U.S. Department of State currently lists Brazil (including Minas Gerais) as Level 2, which is similar to many mega-popular destinations for American travelers.
Astonishing Days out
You can’t come to Minas Gerais without seeing Ouro Preto. A popular day trip from Belo Horizonte, here you can meet fellow travelers.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 17th century, but is modern enough to bring your laptop and complete your work tasks.
There is also the historic, charming town of Diamantina and many natural attractions to explore, including hiking to waterfalls.
Digital nomads will never be bored and will always have comfortable living and working spaces at hand, so add Minas Gerais to your travel wish list!
