We tend to think that most fall and winter travel is reserved for the cultural cities of Europe and the dreamy beaches of Mexico; Right now, however, there is one particular country in the Middle East that rivals the world’s most coveted hotspots in terms of traveler interest.
After a very successful year, Turkey is finally breaking its borders all-time tourist recordswith trends pointing to what could very well be the country’s busiest winter in history.
In the first three quarters of 2023, Turkey received approximately 44.6 million visitors, marking an increase of 13.2% from last year, and an increase of 8.78% from the previous record set in 2019.
What is the reason that tourists are flocking to the beautiful Middle Eastern country in unprecedented numbers?
An abundance of cultural and historical attractions
Turkey is one of the most historically fascinating countries on earth, with a long, storied past spanning thousands of years.
Today, travelers can gain some fascinating insights into the traditions by visiting one of the region’s many historical sites, including the iconic Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the well-preserved ruins of Ephesus, the library of Celsus and also like the Dolmabahçe Palace.
Besides the intricately decorated buildings, you won’t want to miss Cappadocia, a region built on fairytale rock formations, which recently broke its own tourism record.
As far as cultural attractions go, it’s best to stick to Istanbul and Ankara, although I usually prefer the former.
There you will notice that the influences of East and West come together in a beautiful play of colors, a feast for the senses.
I also highly recommend taking a stroll around the bustling Grand Bazaar, but remember that having a local or professional guide next to you will make the experience much smoother.
Picture-worthy landscapes
The breathtaking views in Cappadocia are far from the only picturesque sight you’ll encounter in Turkey.
The country is a mosaic of diverse landscapes and a paradise for nature lovers.
All thrill seekers will be happy to know that the rugged terrain of the Taurus Mountains offers excellent opportunities for hiking and trekking.
The same goes for the Lycian Way, a long-distance hiking trail that offers travelers the chance to explore ancient ruins and charming villages while marveling at panoramic vistas.
However, if you want to experience something truly unique, you won’t want to miss Pamukkale, a natural mosaic of terraces with thermal springs and travertine formations, which creates a surreal landscape reminiscent of a snow-white paradise.
A foodie’s dream
Turkish cuisine offers a range of flavors and aromas not found anywhere else in Europe. That’s why there’s no shortage of travelers flying thousands of miles just to taste some authentic kofta, börek and baklava.
From savory kebabs and flavorful mezes to delectable desserts like Turkish delights, the country’s culinary scene is nothing short of a gastronomic wonder.
The flavors are warm, bold and distinctive, reflecting the personalities of most of the locals you encounter.
Plus, everything is very reasonably priced, so you can enjoy a little bit of everything.
However, if you’re ever in Turkey, don’t miss the opportunity to at least sample a few sips of Turkish coffee – it really introduces you to a whole different set of flavors and aromas compared to your regular mill espresso.
So much to do
Turkey’s delectable dishes will prove particularly tasty and filling after a long day of attending local events and festivals, some of which you will undoubtedly encounter during your travels.
For example, last month Antalya hosted its annual film festival, bringing together filmmakers, actors and cinephiles from all over the world.
If you plan to visit Turkey before the end of the year, you can look forward to the Halal Expo 2023, the UEFA Europa Conference League and concerts by iconic local musicians such as Ümit Yaşar and Gökhan Türkmen.
One thing is for sure: you will never be bored exploring the natural, cultural and historical wonders of Turkey.
