Home to some of the world’s most stunning cities, historic monuments, and golden-sand beaches, Portugal has recently exploded in popularity among American travelers.
While there is no shortage of reasons to visit a country as naturally and culturally blessed as Portugal, it is important to note that what draws tourists in such remarkable numbers is the fact that the region has some of the lowest prices in South-Western Europe.
In an effort to help travelers keep costs to a minimum on their next trip to Portugal, Porto Travel Guide analyzed online data for more than 100 Portuguese citieslooking for the most cost-effective destinations.
They looked at travel, accommodation and food costs and scored each destination out of 100 based on their affordability index.
These were the cities considered the cheapest in all of Portugal:
1. Fafe
With an impressive affordability score of 87.90 out of 100, Fafe is officially the cheapest city in Portugal, and a beautiful one at that.
Tucked into the vibrant landscape of Northern Portugal, this hidden gem offers travelers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon.
Although relatively unknown, the city is home to some of the country’s must-see attractions, including Pedra do Altar, the Peneda-Gerês National Park, a haven for hikers and backpackers looking to explore Portugal’s wild beauty on a budget.
2. Oliveira de Azeméis
The central Portuguese city is probably best known for being home to the Oliveira de Azeméis Museum, a treasure trove of artefacts, works of art and historical exhibitions, all of which offer visitors fascinating insights into the region’s storied past.
If Fafe is a town most appreciated by nature lovers, Oliveira de Azeméis is a haven for history buffs who want to gain a deeper insight into Portuguese culture.
Here you can also take part in traditional festivals and events, although my top recommendation would be to visit the local markets – as well as the lively atmosphere you’re sure to find some great deals.
3. Vila Nova de Famalicão
The third destination on today’s list is yet another hotspot for history buffs.
Vila Nova de Famalicão has a fantastic historic center decorated with medieval architecture, narrow cobbled streets and elegant churches, making visitors feel like they are on the set of a movie.
Moreover, not only is it possible to explore the city on foot, but it is also the best way to enjoy the local atmosphere, ultimately saving you even more on bus and taxi costs.
4. Ovary
Located along the picturesque coastline of central Portugal, Ovar is a seaside resort with some of the country’s most pristine sandy beaches, including Praia do Furadouro and Praia de Esmoriz, where travelers can enjoy the Portuguese Riviera without entrance fees.
In addition to its inviting shores, Ovar is known for its colorful azulejo tiles that adorn the facades of buildings throughout the city.
Plus, accommodation options start from just $14 per night – it really doesn’t get any better than this.
5. Amarante
The fifth cheapest destination in Portugal is Amarante, a picturesque town on the banks of the Tâmega River.
Although small, the city is quite famous among locals for its charming medieval bridge, the Ponte de São Gonçalo, which offers breathtaking views of the river and surrounding landscape.
Amarante is also a gateway to the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its terraced vineyards and picturesque landscapes, so you don’t have to worry about getting bored in this beautiful region of northern Portugal.
Larger Portuguese hotspots that tourists on a budget can visit
While there’s no doubt that all the destinations on the list are as spectacular as they are affordable, they may be a little too off the beaten path for travelers looking for more popular cities and attractions.
If that sounds like you, below are some larger, more popular hotspots that you can still visit on a budget.
- Postage. Based on data from this survey and articles and reports from reliable travel sources, we can say with certainty that Porto is the Portuguese city that best combines affordable prices and vibrant tourist attractions. The diverse range of budget-friendly hotels and eateries in the area creates the perfect budget environment without forsaking cultural and historical attractions.
- Vila Nova de Gaia. A beautiful, albeit smaller alternative to neighboring Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia is the perfect destination for that specific traveler looking for a more unique destination yet wanting to partake in traditional tourist experiences.
- Lisbon. Although Lisbon was relatively low on the list, ranking 85th, the fact that the country’s capital has left almost 20 cities behind it in terms of affordability says a lot about the value the beautiful city offers to its visitors. Although you will have to spend a little more here than in Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia, the sights, events and attractions you will experience in return are priceless.
