The Caribbean has always been a bucket list item for travelers around the world, and the region’s paradise beaches only seem to become more popular as time goes on.
However, there is one small island that has managed to fly under the radar, while neighboring destinations explode in popularity.
The beautiful country that celebrates it 50th anniversary next February has recently revealed itself as the Caribbean’s best-hidden gem, with sunny coasts, idyllic landscapes and an exceptional culinary scene.
If you’re still unsure where to start your next trip, here are six reasons why you should consider this underrated destination:
An escape from reality
Grenada, also called the ‘Spice Isle’, is one of the most beautiful countries in the Caribbean.
The small island is especially popular among American travelers, who account for 60% of the area’s tourism.
If you take a closer look at the demographics of the tourists who travel thousands of miles to reach Grenada, you’ll see that most of them are full-time workers looking for a short escape from reality – and the country offers just that.
Whatever your idea of a dream vacation, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for within the island’s 344 km².
Those who just want to sit back and relax will have the time of their lives at one of the many luxurious, all-inclusive resorts near Grenada’s most coveted beaches.
Most also offer world-class spa treatments, yoga sessions and wellness retreats.
If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend enjoying a nutmeg massage. After all, Grenada is one of the world’s largest exporters of the spice.
Thrill seekers, on the other hand, may prefer a walk through the beautiful rainforests.
I can’t recommend the Seven Sisters Waterfall trail enough. Although there is a $2 entrance fee, the views that reward you at the end are more than worth it.
Natural wonders
Those fortunate enough to have experienced Grenada firsthand can attest that the views here are all postcard-worthy.
The pristine yet vibrantly colored beaches, waterfalls and lush rainforests provide the perfect backdrop for some of the most breathtaking photos you will ever take in your life, so don’t forget to take your camera with you when sightseeing.
Sights not to be missed are the Grand Etang National Park and the Annandale Falls.
The former is home to Grand Etang Lake, a volcanic crater lake surrounded by dense forests, and yes, the views are as majestic as they sound.
The latter is a majestic waterfall that seems straight out of a fairy tale.
I won’t even go into the pristine beaches that surround the island (e.g. Pink Gin, Gouyave, Grand Anse) as there’s a good chance these will draw you to Grenada in the first place.
Vibrant cultural heritage
The mix of African, Caribbean and European influences is evident in Grenada’s unique, vibrant cultural heritage.
Spend a day away from the beach and explore historic sites such as Fort George or the Grenada National Museum. I also recommend that you plan your visit so that you visit at least one of the countries of the country lively festivals.
Rich cuisine
When you’re on an island known for its massive spice production, the last thing you need to worry about is bland, boring food.
Locally sourced nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon are incorporated into almost all traditional delicacies, such as oil fluff, lambie sauce and callaloo soup.
Be sure to finish your meal with a decadent dessert, such as nutmeg ice cream or fudge made with locally produced chocolate.
Outdoor adventures
If adventure seekers aren’t yet convinced that Grenada is the perfect destination for them, take a look at the plethora of outdoor activities available on the island.
Visit the iconic Underwater Sculpture Park, go scuba diving and explore one of the 15 shipwrecks that litter the waters of the local beaches, book a sunset sailing trip and hike the scenic trails of Grand Etang National Park.
One thing is for sure: you will never be bored as you make your way through Grenada.
Welcoming atmosphere
The final piece of the mosaic that makes up Grenada’s undeniable appeal is the warmth and friendliness of Grenada’s locals, who create a welcoming atmosphere that makes travelers feel at home.
It’s easy to immerse yourself in the island’s captivating culture when you encounter the kind of genuine warmth and friendliness that Grenadians are best known for.
