American travel Advisory: Belize – Level 2: Be extra careful

Due to the high crime rate in Belize, you should be extra careful. In some places the risk is greater.

Even during the day and in tourist destinations, violent crimes such as sexual violence, home invasions, armed robberies and murder are commonplace. Gang-related crime is responsible for a significant portion of violent crime. Travelers are advised to exercise caution when visiting the southern region of Belize City as crime is high there. The resources and expertise of local police are not sufficient to combat major crimes. Most crimes remain unsolved and unpunished.

Belize City – Level 3: Reconsider travel

Americans should stay away from visiting Belize City. In the past, gang-related violent crimes have primarily occurred on the south side of Belize City. In this area, which extends south from the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road, there is no overlap with the usual tourist areas. By practicing good security measures, each visitor must exercise a high level of due diligence and reduce their exposure to the dangers associated with crime.

Safety tips for Belize

  1. Stay away from remote areas – Staying in isolated locations, especially at night and in urban areas, increases the risk of possible robberies.
  2. Stay alert in crowds – Popular tourist spots often attract pickpockets. Be aware of your surroundings and make sure your valuables are safely stored when exploring busy areas.
  3. Keep a low profile with your belongings – Given the common problem of petty theft in Belize, it is advisable not to wear conspicuous items such as jewelry or watches and to be careful with your phone.
  4. Avoid nighttime bus travel – Opt for taxis when traveling at night for greater safety. Arrange a reputable taxi through your accommodation to ensure a safe journey.
  5. Do not use medications – The influence of cartels in Belize has had a negative impact on the local population. Refrain from supporting illegal activities by avoiding drug use. Furthermore, drug penalties in the region are strict and it is crucial to avoid legal complications.
