There’s nothing like the freedom and excitement that traveling alone can give you.
You are the boss, you can do your own thing, and often you can do it for less than traveling with friends or partners.
The hardest part may actually be choosing where to go – but if you’re thinking of taking a solo trip to Europe next year, a recent list put together by airline Wizzair of the best solo travel destinations on this continent may be helpful.
Wizz has collected data from individual traveler reviews on TripAdvisor to compile a list of the five most loved destinations in Europe.
Featuring a great mix of popular cities and a surprise or two, this list could make a great solo itinerary for spring or summer 2024.
Rhodes, Greece
Rhodes will always be a favorite among travelers to Greece, and solo travelers are no different.
Despite some devastating fires this summer, Rhodes has retained its position as a top destination in Europe.
Rhodes is a relatively safe place with good healthcare and public services – and it is reasonable when it comes to costs.
Lonely Planet estimates that hostel rooms can be as cheap as $35 per night, while dinner for two at a local restaurant can be as cheap as around $50.
Split, Croatia
Croatia was recently ranked as the best country in the world for solo female travelers, and Split is certainly one of the most popular destinations.
This coastal treasure has just the right mix of beautiful beaches and fascinating history and culture – perfect for exploring at your own pace, which is one of the great joys of traveling alone.
Croatia is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in the world, ranking at number 14 on the most recent Global Peace Index.
It will also be a great year to visit in 2024, with major events such as the Mediterranean Film Festival and the celebration of Saint Sveti Duje.
Faro, Portugal
Destinations like Faro show why Portugal has had a record year for tourism.
Located in the heart of the beautiful Algarve region, Faro is the gateway to some of the most breathtaking beaches in all of Europe – not to mention the generally favorable weather all year round.
The city has a fantastic party vibe and is home to major festivals such as Afro Nation (June) and Festival F (September).
And if you’re still not convinced about Faro and its surroundings, perhaps the news that Americans will be able to fly there directly next year will convince you?
Istanbul, Turkey
A city packed with famous icons such as the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar, as well as many hidden gems – Istanbul is a place where a solo traveler can enjoy many days.
Istanbul has long been a place where the cultures of Europe and Asia collide, so it’s a great place to enjoy unique sights, sounds, and smells as you wander its maze of cobblestone streets.
Although it can be a hectic place, it is generally safe for solo travelers, provided you follow normal precautions; it also has great, affordable public transport and street food.
Florence, Italy
Located in the heart of the Tuscany region, Florence is easily one of my favorite cities in Europe.
Florence, a beautiful riverside city defined by its artistic importance and as one of the main epicenters of the Renaissance, is a place that will move you.
The headline acts of this incredible Italian show are undoubtedly the cathedral and its ‘Duomo’, Michelangelo’s famous David statue, as well as the unparalleled Uffizi Museum and the Ponte Vecchio Bridge.
But what makes it great for solo travelers are the quaint, independent cafes and bars, excellent nightlife and uniquely beautiful apartments where you can stay right in the city.
