Let’s face it: for many of us, making wreaths doesn’t come naturally. The holidays are already stressful, from picking out your Christmas decor to the countless events filling your calendar in the new year. But before you shake your head at this simple DIY project, think: wouldn’t a wreath covered in bows look beautiful? The answer is always yes.
Fashion spoke to DIY queen Emily Shaw, who drops by @emilyrayna on TikTok, about how to make your own wreath without too much stress. The 24-year-old’s crafting career took off when she challenged herself to break out of a creative rut during quarantine. Shaw asked her parents if she could renovate their home, and they agreed with one exception: She could only use the money she earned from selling their current furniture to finance thrifty purchases for the project.
After documenting and uploading her ventures on TikTok, her following grew dramatically and she now has almost six million followers. Now her account is dedicated to long-term projects, such as renovating her new houseas well as tutorials for viewers to follow home decor Unpleasant holiday decoration ideas. And while we’re focusing on Christmas crafts, Shaw has no shortage of wreath ideas if you’re not feeling inspired by the bow-filled coquette aesthetic that has dominated Christmas decor this year. The maker also offered several alternatives, from a moss wreath and a feather-covered wreath to a dried flower wreath (like baby’s breath), and even a wreath made entirely of puzzle pieces.
And if you’re a little nervous about entering DIY territory, take the pressure off by knowing that the holiday decor is only put on display once a year. “You don’t have to worry so much about how perfect it looks, it’s all art and craft at the end of the day,” she says. “The most exciting part of making Christmas decorations is making them with your friends and family. Then you really have a nice memory to hang on the wall.”
Here, Shaw gives us a step-by-step guide to making the perfect DIY Christmas wreath.
