Spain tops the list with its Digital Nomad Visa, with a score of 4.50. It is an attractive choice because of its wonderful Mediterranean climate, low crime rates, affordable cost of living and fast internet.

The Spanish government has clearly taken many elements of the digital nomad lifestyle into account when setting up the digital nomad visa process, offering the option to apply from your home country or within Spain as a tourist. The Spanish Startup Law also makes it easier to set up your business online in Spain in just a few hours.

Essentials:

  • Application fee and processing time: approximately USD 110 (EUR 80 + EUR 20 for residence permit card), processing time of 15-45 days.
  • How to apply?
    • Apply through the Spanish consulate in your home country and receive a 1-year visa, on that basis enter Spain, change the 1-year visa into a 3-year residence card.
    • Enter Spain as a tourist, submit documents, receive a residence permit for 3 years
  • Length of visa: 1 year, the visa can be extended for 3 years and then for another 2 years before applying for permanent residency
  • Minimum monthly income requirement: approximately USD 2,354 (EUR 2,140).
  • Health score: 60.9.
  • Tax-free period: 6 months
  • Taxes: 15% for the first 4 years and 24% thereafter.

The Argentine lifestyle provides a high-quality living experience at an affordable price, with healthcare that is both commendable and beneficial for long-term stays. Please note that newly elected President Javier Milei, who took office on December 10, 2023, has promised sweeping changes in the country. It remains to be seen what this will mean for digital nomads.

  • Application fee and processing time: approximately USD 200. Processing time may vary, so it is advisable to contact the nearest Argentine consulate or embassy for the most up-to-date information.
  • How to apply? Providing documents from your home country, including a valid passport, a 4×4 photo, a request signed by the interested party and the independent work to be carried out, a short CV stating your experience in the field in which you will work, and the level of the studies or training completed, documentation proving the work performed, and at least one reference related to your profession, and proof of payment of the service costs
  • Duration of the visa: 180 days, which can then be extended for another 180 days
  • Minimum monthly income requirement: approximately USD 2,750 (EUR 2,500).
  • Health score: 54.4.
  • Tax-free period: full visa duration.
  • Taxes: 0%, consult a local Argentinian accountant for the most current information

3. Romania – Home to some of the fastest internet connections in the world

  • How to apply? You can apply for a Romanian digital nomad visa at the nearest Romanian embassy or online at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Duration of the visa: 1 year and extendable for 1 additional year
  • Minimum monthly income requirement: approximately USD 3,630 (EUR 3,300).
  • Health score: 45.7.
