On January 2, 2024, the US Department of State announced renewed his travel advice Colombia, which advises Americans to reconsider their travel plans to the country. The opinion cites concerns about crime and terrorism as the main reasons for this caution.
Do not travel to these areas of Colombia:
- The departments of Arauca, Cauca (excluding Popayán) and Norte de Santander due to crime and terrorism.
- The border area between Colombia and Venezuela due to crime, kidnapping and the risk of detention when crossing into Venezuela from Colombia.
Colombia sees widespread violent crimes, including murder, assault and armed robbery, in addition to organized criminal activities such as extortion and kidnapping. Terrorist groups and criminal organizations are active in the country and pose a threat to various public places and US government facilities with possible attacks. Demonstrations, which often disrupt transportation and travel, are common across Colombia and can escalate into violence, causing injuries or fatalities, the advisory body said.
