According to a study by Hopper January will be the least expensive month of the year to buy a ticket, with costs dropping 11% from the previous month.
Domestic prices are expected to start even lower than in 2023 and remain so over the next six months.
Domestic ticket costs for the first half of 2024 will be lower than those of the previous year and the pre-pandemic period.
Then, in late spring, prices will begin to rise in anticipation of spring break and summer.
“After a busy holiday season, we expect another strong travel year – and there’s good news for those planning travel for 2024,” said Hayley Berg, chief economist at Hopper. T+L. “Flexibility remains a key trend for 2024 consumers emerging from the pandemic. Over the past three years there has been a shift in consumer behavior, with more travelers willing to pay extra for products specifically designed to protect them from travel disruptions.”
Hopper advised travelers to book in January to find cheap flights, as these deals often occur after the peak season. Moreover, travelers should think about it book their flights during the week because Wednesday is usually the cheapest day and Sunday the most expensive.
Another method to get the best deal is to book early. Three to four months before the planned departure date, Hopper advises travelers to keep an eye on flight costs. Customers of Hopper, Google Flights or Skyscanner can set price alerts.
In 2024, travelers will look for diversity, with popular travel destinations including the bright lights of Las Vegas, the entertainment district of Orlando, the beaches of Miami and more. Travelers from all over the world crave warm weather, and the most popular destinations are Cancun and Punta Cana, followed by cities like London, Rome and Tokyo.
