What should every skincare routine include?
About ten years ago it seemed pretty clear: cleanser, toner, moisturizer.
But today, there are a million or more choices when it comes to products you can add to your skin care routine.
It’s all become a bit overwhelming.
So in this post we wanted to bring it back to the basics. What are you doing Real need in your skincare routine, and which product is most important?
What should every skincare routine include? Personalize it first!
The first thing you want to realize is that everyone’s skin is different. So what your skin needs does not have to be the same as what someone else’s skin needs.
So as you go through the process of building your skincare routine, you’ll want to consider how you can personalize it. And there are many ways to do that. You can personalize:
- The products you use
- The order in which you use them
- How often you use them
- When you perform your normal skin care routine
- What special treatments do you give yourself throughout the week?
For the healthiest, most youthful-looking skin, you want to become an expert at knowing yourself. That means understanding not only what your skin needs to look its best, but also how stress affects you, how diet affects you and when your skin might need some extra TLC.
You also want to think about your schedule. When do you need the fastest, most efficient routine, and when can you slow down and take some extra time for yourself?
If you can create a combination of both, your skin will thrive.
Second, go with the basics
There’s a reason why basic skin care goes like this: cleanse, strengthen, moisturize.
These are the basics of skin care. In other words, if you do nothing else, your skin will be in good shape as long as you do these three tasks every day. However, you do have to pay attention to a few things.
When cleaning
The biggest mistake people make when cleaning is being too rough. Many of our customers have sensitive skin, so we always recommend using a gentle, creamy cleanser. If your skin feels dry and tight after cleansing, you have used the wrong product. You want one that leaves your skin feeling hydrated, soft and clean.
When toning
Despite what you may have heard, it is always best to use a toner after cleansing. It will help your skin absorb your moisturizer better. If the skin is dry, the other ingredients simply remain on top. When moisturized with a toner, the ingredients can penetrate to work more effectively.
The biggest mistake people make is choosing toners that contain a lot of alcohol. Toners were once created to help rid the skin of the last bits of dirt, grime and bacteria, and alcohol is an effective cleanser. But alcohol dries out your skin. The longer you use it, the more your skin will suffer from dryness and dullness.
Today we know that the best toner is one that rids your skin of any remaining impurities and prepares it for a moisturizer. That means your toner should help bring your skin back into balance after cleansing. Look for alcohol-free options that feel refreshing and energizing, like our Rescue + Relief Spray.
It’s a good choice, especially if your skin is dry, easily irritated, suffers from rosacea, or is prone to breakouts. The spray is formulated to nourish, balance and treat your skin with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and problem-free, restoring radiance and clarity.
Additionally, because it is oil-free and pH neutral, it can help all skin types stay balanced and clear, and won’t clog pores or cause an outbreak of acne or eczema.
When moisturizing
The biggest mistake people make with this step is choosing any moisturizer. The truth is that moisturizing is completely possible the most important part of your skin care routine. Choose a quality product and your skin will look soft and hydrated all day long. Choose the wrong one, and your skin will feel dry and tight with worsened fine lines and wrinkles within an hour or two.
What should every skincare routine include? Third, focus on your moisturizer
The reason why your moisturizer is so important is that it does much more than just moisturize.
Moisturizer helps reduce wrinkles
Using a moisturizer with plumping, hydrating ingredients will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also slowing their development. According to a studyHydrated skin produces wrinkles much more slowly than dry, unhydrated skin.
Moisturizer helps prevent skin problems
If you moisturize every day with a quality product, you will minimize the chance of developing skin problems such as dryness, flaking, wrinkles, inflammation and even oiliness. (Yes, oily skin needs moisturizer too!) This can save you a lot of hassle and frustration in the future.
Moisturizer prevents water loss
The skin looks young when it contains enough water. But every day your skin battles the atmosphere around you. Especially during the cold winter months, the cold, dry air removes moisture from your skin, causing your lips to become chapped and your skin to feel dry much faster than in the summer.
Using an efficient moisturizer ensures that your skin retains moisture so that it does not lose it as easily, leaving the skin smooth and plump.
Moisturizer tames inflammation
Inflammation is enemy number one when it comes to skin health. It is the cause of many skin problems, including redness, acne and conditions such as eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. It is something you should strive for every day to keep the skin calm and free of inflammation. Choosing a soothing, anti-inflammatory moisturizer can help you with this.
We recommend our Calming Moisture because it is formulated with powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients. More about that below.
Moisturizer helps fight acne
This may seem counterintuitive, especially if you have oily skin, but even oily skin can become dry. Your skin may even be oily because it is overreacting to dehydration. When the skin becomes dry, it signals the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, which can then lead to breakouts. So even if you have oily skin, choosing the right moisturizer is important to control acne.
Moisturizer soothes sensitive skin
If you have sensitive skin that is often irritated or reactive, you need a soothing moisturizer that will help soothe the skin. If you find one, you’ll find that your moisturizer can go a long way toward making your skin feel calmer and more comfortable.
Moisturizer slows down the appearance of aging
Even your mother knew that applying a good moisturizer every day was a good idea if she wanted to look young for as long as possible. That hasn’t changed. It is still true that well-hydrated skin will look younger for longer. In many ways, moisturizer is still the key to a youthful, glowing complexion in old age.
