With its combination of vibrant cities, a rich and interesting history, beautiful and secluded beaches, epic mountain ranges and a host of family-friendly attractions, the state of Georgia is definitely one to have on your 2024 bucket list.

The state has gone from a hidden gem to a record-breaking tourist destination in recent years, and when you look at what’s happening there, it’s easy to see why.

This is why 2024 will be an important year for this cultural southern state:

Historic cities

Georgia is home to some iconic American cities packed with culture and history, perhaps none more so than Atlanta.

The city was rated as one of the top destinations to visit in 2022 by both Lonely Planet and National Geographic, and was recently named the fourth nicest city in the country.

Atlanta is home to major museums, lush green spaces, vibrant nightlife, and family attractions like the Georgia Aquarium.

A four-hour drive up the coast is the city of Savannah, Georgia’s oldest city (founded in 1733).

Here you’ll find enchanting and impressive architecture, tree-lined avenues and tranquil parks, and a culinary scene that draws on the traditions and history of the south.

Beautiful beaches and islands

Georgia has a fascinating coastline unlike most, with secluded beaches, picturesque seaside towns and a host of barrier islands.

Head to famous barrier islands such as St Simons Island, Jekyll Island and Brunswick Island and experience the unique blend of rich, green wetland combined with pure white sand and the vast Atlantic Ocean beyond.

These islands offer everything from pure relaxation to an outdoor adventure full of hiking and kayaking.

It’s going to be a big year for attractions

In addition to the regular sights, a large number of new attractions will open in Georgia in 2024, according to the tourism organization. Explore Georgia.

In Atlanta, the vibrant music scene expands with the Classic Center Arena, which hosts live music and other events all summer long.

Also in Atlanta, the fascinating National Center for Civil and Human Rights museum will begin a major expansion to celebrate ten years since its opening.

There are also some big new family-friendly attractions coming, including the renovated and renamed Margaritaville Fins Up Water Park in Buford, and the opening of the Georgia Safari Conservation Park in April.

The safari park will feature luxury accommodation, including suites that overlook some of the exotic animals that live there.

The choice of hotels continues to grow

Georgia is a diverse state and the growing interest from all kinds of travelers has resulted in a lot of money being spent on creating new hotels and redeveloping existing ones.

A new Signia by Hilton Atlanta hotel will open in Atlanta in January with no fewer than 967 rooms.

Also opening in January is the boutique Trillith Guesthouse hotel in Fayetteville, home to famed TV and film studio Trillith Studios.

In February, Cloudland will open at McLemore Resort Lookout Mountain, which will offer a wellness spa, mountaintop golf course and unsurpassed views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and McLemore Cove.

A quieter winter destination

If you’ve read all this and thought you just can’t wait until spring or summer to visit Georgia, then you’re in luck, because the state is a fun winter destination that is very underrated.

Whether you want to stay in a cabin in a mountainous wilderness or enjoy the beautiful barrier islands along the coastline, winter is a great time to visit with lower prices and fewer crowds.
