While it certainly feels like nowhere is as safe as it once was, it’s important for solo travelers to keep their dreams on track and make sense of it.
As you embark on your adventures, it’s completely normal to feel a little uneasy about what’s happening around the world, but certain events have travelers wondering about the safest place to visit on their own for solo travelers!
Europe is generally a safe choice for first-time solo travelers, and while many countries are ranked based on a variety of factors, sometimes the safer options are the lesser-known places.
The time when Western Europe stole the spotlight is long gone.
Northern and Eastern European countries are creeping into the ranks and showcasing their historical past, diverse cultures and affordable prices.
Estonia
Across the sea, opposite Finland and bordering Latvia, this small Baltic country has a lot to offer those lucky enough to visit.
Estonia is an affordable starting point for solo travelers looking for a safe country to explore within Europe, and the charming architecture doesn’t hurt either!
Get lost through the winding cobbled streets as you stroll past craft shops, charming pubs and the welcoming town square. With its colorful buildings and orange roofs, it’s impossible not to experience a sense of wonder and magic when you visit Estonia.
Latvia
Just below Estonia, Latvia appears with its intricately decorated buildings and narrow walkways. Latvia is a relatively small country and is often overlooked by people visiting Europe.
Communal markets, old town squares and a beautiful coastline – why wouldn’t you want to visit these? The Gothic capital Riga is the best starting point to explore this incredible country.
With museums, historical sights, castles and a lively sauna landscape, Latvia has something for everyone.
Lithuania
Do you sense a theme? You can visit these three countries in one trip! South of Latvia and you’re at your next solo travel destination: Lithuania.
As the largest Baltic state, this historic country is once again often overlooked by most American tourists.
The perfect mix of nature, culture and delicious food, this is not to be missed. The capital Vilnius is incredibly attractive for those who appreciate a good architectural piece or two. The UNESCO-protected Old Town is lined with charming buildings and tree-lined streets.
Why are these 3 countries good for solo travelers?
Easy to navigate:
Sometimes the biggest question we have as solo travelers is, “How do I get around?” Believe me, unreliable transport, taxi scams and irregular buses are a hassle, but when you travel to smaller countries it’s a lot easier…
If you rent a car – even better! The roads in all 3 countries are easy to navigate and thanks to their size you can get from A to Z in no time.
If you choose to stay in the cities, they are also incredibly walkable and safe for solo travelers to wander around.
Affordability:
Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia – whatever you choose, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to cheap prices! Hostels can often be found for less than $20 per night and beer can sometimes cost 1 euro or less.

If you are traveling alone anywhere in the world, always stay alert wherever you are! While certain neighborhoods are to be avoided, all three Baltic states are safe for solo travelers.
