The Costa Maya is one of the most underrated places in the southern part of the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.

Tens of thousands of cruise ship visitors visit the hotspot, but… it doesn’t get nearly as much publicity as places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

However, that changed after the completion of the Mayan train route between Palenque and Cancun.


These lesser-traveled locations offer a unique glimpse into ancient Mayan culture and are home to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the area. even if they lack the vast all-encompassing offerings found in the rest of the state.

According to recent statistics, the region is particularly popular with tourists this winter. with almost 80,000 people planning to spend their time discovering the region.

Based on the most recent estimates, The capital and cultural center of Quintana Roo, Chetumal, is preparing to welcome around 51,000 visitors this winter. The southern destination is best known for its historic neighborhoods and old wooden buildings, many of which are undergoing major renovations as part of the Barrios Mágicos initiative.

Chetumal is a coastal city that can be visited for a day trip or a longer stay from nearby Tulum and Bacalar, thanks to its train station that is part of the Mayan train network.

In the meantime, Bacalar, an eco-hotspot, is expected to will receive almost 21,000 visitors this winter, ranks it as the region’s second most popular destination. Small boutique hotels and overwater bungalows are Bacalar’s specialty; these accommodation options are more intimate than the large all-inclusive properties in other parts of the region.


Mahahual

Finally, During the peak season, approximately 8,000 passengers are expected to arrive at the cruise ship hub of Mahahual. Even though it’s not as high as other parts of the Mexican Caribbean, it’s still a great place to get away from the crowds. However, Mahahual receives thousands of cruise ship visitors every day, which occasionally gives the impression that it is busy.

Mahahual Village: Often called the heart of the Costa Maya, Mahahual is a quiet fishing village with a picturesque beach. The village is known for its relaxed atmosphere, crystal clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins: For history buffs, the Mayan ruins of Chacchoben are a must-see. Just a short drive from the cruise port, these ancient ruins offer a glimpse into the Mayan civilization. The site features several restored temples and is surrounded by a lush jungle landscape.

Bacalar Lagoon: Known as the ‘Lake of Seven Colors’, Bacalar Lagoon is known for its strikingly clear blue waters and is a perfect place for swimming, kayaking and sailing. The lagoon is also home to unique geological formations such as cenotes and stromatolites.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve: Sian Ka’an is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a natural wonder. This biosphere reserve has a rich biodiversity, including tropical forests, mangroves and a large marine section bisected by a barrier reef.

Maya, lost Mayan kingdom: For adventure seekers, this themed water park offers a unique blend of Mayan history with fun and excitement. It features water slides, zip lines and a lazy river, making it an ideal spot for families and thrill seekers.

Local cuisine experience: No visit to Costa Maya is complete without enjoying the local cuisine. The area offers a range of dining options, from beachside shacks serving fresh seafood to upscale restaurants serving traditional Mexican cuisine.
