Americans have been bitten by the travel bug again as normality has been restored worldwide, and whether it’s destinations closer to home or exotic-sounding foreign locales, they’re taking their passports into the skies in droves.
However, there is one destination they seem to be most attracted to:
With its long miles of sandy beach, licked by waters of the clearest blue, and dotted with resorts competing for the titles of largest, best and most luxurious, Tulum seems to be on everyone’s radar recently.
It may be a tried-and-tested beach hotspot, but 2024 looks set to be the biggest year yet, with even more exciting developments on the way:
Incredible luxury resorts
Tulum is primarily a resort destination, and ‘resort’ is really what it does bestbut that’s not necessarily a bad thing: nowhere in Mexico, or in Latin America as a whole, will you find the same exceptional, award-winning hospitality as here.
The city is essentially focused on tourism, and somewhere you would go if you wanted to spend money on a colossal, ultra-modern, all-inclusive hotel on the beach; Gentrification controversies aside, it’s the perfect place for new visitors to the United States because it can feel very Americanized:
English is widely spoken in the resorts, meaning you won’t need to brush up on your existing Spanish. Guests will almost never feel homesick thanks to the many American diners and the huge expat community living in the city, and the tourist-friendly nature of the beaches.
Mexico for beginners, if you will. Not that that’s a bad thing.
An emerging cultural center
Tulum may be the capital of the Mexican Caribbean, but that is unknown to most people a cultural destination in the making.
Admittedly, it is not quite there yet, compared to the cultural centers that are Merida or Valladolid, also on the Yucatan Peninsula, but its historical value and heritage are being emphasized by various state-led efforts in an attempt to diversify the tourist offer .
An example of this is the opening of a new Frida Kahlo Museum near the archaeological zone.
Although Kahlo has no known ties to Tulum, having grown up and spent most of her life in the village of Coyoacán, now a district of Mexico City, this new cultural center will help introduce resort guests to the iconic Mexican painter and divisive 20th century figure, without having to travel far.
Additionally, Tulum is home to one of Mexico’s most famous ancient structures: El Castilloa pre-Hispanic fortress that is part of a wider Mayan ruin settlement and sits on a cliff that rises above the white sands and overlooks the bright blue Caribbean.
You see? Tulum is not just about beaches – even when you are there Are beaches involved.
Tulum is ridiculously safe
Tulum is also much safer than ever before.
Although the Mexican Caribbean as a whole is a relatively low-risk destination, as the US Department of State confirms itself by classifying the majority of the states in the Yucatán Peninsula as level 2 or 1, a some criminal event occurred.
This has mainly taken the form of gang disputes in suburban areas in Cancun, Tulum, Playa Del Carmen and other major urban centers, but these are not known to directly or indirectly affect innocent tourists.
In fact, there has not been a single case of a visitor being injured or losing their life due to violence while vacationing in Tulum in the past year or even earlier, proving that it is completely safe to visit, especially now ‘thousands of troops’ are being deployed.
According to the Cancun sunpatrolling in Tulum will be greatly intensified this seasonwhich keeps tourists protected.
A new airport and a scenic train
Finally, this winter the city will see the opening of a brand new international airportconnecting it to a number of destinations in Mexico and the United States, as well as the launch of the Mayan Train, which visits the center of Tulum.
The Mayan Train officially launched on December 1, but not all routes are immediately operational.
It may still be a while before the service from Tulum begins, but once it is fully implemented, the train will connect the Caribbean city with all the other spots in the Mayan Riviera, such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Porto Morelos. travel greatly facilitated and making it safer for visitors to get around.
On the airport side, there have been six US hubs to date that have announced nonstop connections to Tulum International Airport, including New York (Newark), Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles.
However, as demand for Tulum increases, we expect more routes to be confirmed soon.
