The couture collections ended in dramatic fashion today in Paris with the presentation of the Margiela Artisanal collection by John Galliano. Under the Pont Alexandre III, Galliano’s somber vision unfolded with an immediately striking silhouette: a smaller-than-small waist, cinched to the point of no return, that emphasized the voluptuous curve and a plump backside. This tribute to the female silhouette – after all, those were certainly fruiting hips – was further characterized by a small group of models wearing elegant, sheer dresses that completely exposed their bodies underneath, including their pubic bones, covered in hair.
The Brazilian wax has long become the standard for women, so perhaps it is not surprising that this effect was achieved through artistic means. One dress seemed to achieve the illusion of a forbidden triangle via carefully placed pleats, while another model wore a catsuit under her sheer slip dress painted trompe l’oeil style (complete with a small pubic hair wig). As teens on TikTok start to get nostalgic for the past, when celebrities didn’t have stylists and actresses still had their naturally crooked teeth, could the return of pubic hair be this generation’s next wave? cri de cour? After all, what’s more body positive than a full bush?
