In the first two weeks of 2024, the ports of Cozumel and Mahahual in Quintana Roo welcomed more than 100 cruise ships, cementing the region’s leading status in cruise tourism. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa highlighted this achievement as a boost to both the cruise sector and overall economic prosperity.

The “New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo” aims to attract more cruise ships and extend their stays, to the benefit of local tourism workers and their families. With 106 ships received at the beginning of 2024, the region expects a record year, after the influx of more than 5 million visitors last year on 1,500 ships.

The leading cruise port in Mexico

The Port of Cozumel is not only the most visited port for return cruises from the US to the Western Caribbean; it also includes the distinction that it is of the world fourth largest cruise port in terms of berthing capacity and annual cruise traffic.

This status underlines its strategic importance in the global cruise industry. The port’s infrastructure is designed to accommodate a large number of ships and passengers, making a significant contribution to the local economy.

It serves as a gateway to the island’s diverse attractions, from its famous coral reefs for snorkeling and diving to its rich cultural heritage. Cozumel’s commitment to maintaining a high level of service for both cruise lines and passengers has made it a crucial location on international cruise itineraries.
