While it’s still too early to tell what 2024 has in store for travelers, it’s clear that a handful of once-overlooked destinations are poised to become some of the year’s trendiest hotspots.
Recently released data from the International Air Transport Association (AITA) showed that not only does global travel continue to recover at record pace, but a number of destinations are seeing unprecedented numbers of visitors entering their borders, surpassing even their pre-pandemic record levels.
The report shows that these five European countries in particular lead the way as the fastest growing destinations on the continent.
5. Poland
Coming in at No. 5 is perhaps the most surprising country on today’s list: Poland.
Although international travelers have historically overlooked Poland in favor of its better-known neighbors such as Germany or the Czech Republic, it is becoming increasingly clear that the cheap prices, safe atmosphere and beautiful sights found in the Central European country are simply too beautiful to miss.
As travelers start to become a bit more budget-conscious, finding a reasonably priced yet attractive country like this isn’t something to take for granted.
Those who want to explore Poland’s storied past can stroll through Krakow’s Old Town, Warsaw Royal Castle or the heartbreaking Auschwitz-Birkenau Monument, while visitors who want to get more in tune with the country’s breathtaking nature will enjoy from a walk through the Tatra Mountains or the Masurian region. Lakes.
4. Malta
I had the chance to explore some of the 316 km2 (122 square miles) making up the tenth smallest country in the world, I can attest to the fact that Malta is criminally underestimated.
Valletta, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of baroque palaces, churches and gardens, but what I found most interesting was the impeccable mix of European and African cultural influences that were palpable throughout the city.
However, if you are thinking about choosing Malta for your next summer holiday, then Valletta is not the best place to stay.
Instead, consider a visit to the northern part of the island, near Mellieħa Bay, where the white-sand beaches bear a striking resemblance to those in the Maldives.
3. Iceland
Considering how big solo travel has become in recent years, the fact that such a stunning, safe destination is on today’s list should come as no surprise.
The Land of Fire and Ice is not only home to some of the world’s most stunning attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle and the otherworldly volcanic terrains, but also a cultural treasure trove with a long history in music, literature and art – and there’s no better place to experience all that and more than Reykjavik, the iconic capital.
2. Greece
Much has been written about Greece in the past year.
With Greece breaking its tourism record not once, but twice in the past few months alone, it is clear that Greece is enjoying unprecedented popularity in the international travel world. 2024 will be an even busier year for the Mediterranean country.
That’s because Greece is a breathtaking, diverse country that welcomes every type of traveler, from beachgoers looking to explore the pristine sands of Mykonos, Zakynthos or Santorini to avid skiers looking to perfect their skills on the state-of-the-art slopes of Vasilitsa or Florina.
City trippers also have plenty to do and see here – between the ancient allure of Athens and the lively atmosphere of Thessaloniki, Greece promises to never bore you.
1. Portugal
Those who have been keeping up with the latest travel news know that Portugal has just left behind what can only be described as the most successful year in history.
More and more travelers are starting to appreciate not only the pastel-colored towns and sun-drenched coasts, but also the reasonable prices that set the country apart from other Western European destinations (if you’re on a particularly tight budget, you can take a look at this list of the 5 cheapest cities in Portugal).
Whether you plan to explore the historic streets of Lisbon, the untamed beauty of the Azores or the idyllic beaches of the Algarve, I can guarantee that the wonders of Portugal will live up to the hype.
