Wherever you go, criminals target busy tourist towns and the area including the seaside resorts of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo has become a huge tourist draw over the years. Visitors shouldn’t hesitate when planning a trip to Los Cabos, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be wary.
When you’re on vacation, you often let your guard down because guarding your valuables isn’t your priority. Because you want to take in as much of the environment as possible and don’t know the ins and outs of the environment, you may be a little out of balance.
But don’t worry, Los Cabos is considered a very safe destination. But here are some great tips to keep in mind when you’re on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Stay in crowded areas
Regardless of where you travel, the first tip is to stay in heavily populated areas. There are a lot of people walking around in the tourist areas and there are usually more security and video cameras monitoring the area. In Los Cabos, the main tourist areas are: marina areas, downtown Cabo, old town San Jose del Cabo and the Tourist Corridor.
Don’t walk around at night
Don’t walk around at night. Although it is considered a safe place to visit, walking around alone at night increases your chances of being harassed or robbed. Maybe you don’t look like a local, you don’t speak the language or you just look lost, which could attract people to take advantage of this.
Do not drink tap water
Although the fresh water comes from the Sierra de La Laguna Mountains, the water can be contaminated before it reaches the tap. So our next safety tip is to drink bottled water to ensure you don’t get sick.
Swim at designated beaches
The area is home to beautiful coastal beaches, but not all of them are suitable for swimming. Therefore, due to the strong undertow, it is best to swim only on the designated beaches. Some of the most popular beaches where you can swim safely are: Medano, Chileno, Santa Maria and Palmilla.
Dress to impress, but not to draw attention to yourself
Don’t attract attention by being too flashy. That could mean wearing expensive clothes or throwing money around in restaurants and bars. Yes, still look and dress your best, but be careful with your valuables.
Don’t accept drinks from strangers
Standard for wherever you go, local or not, make sure you don’t accept drinks from someone you don’t know. Both men and women can be targets of theft or worse, so it’s best to stay away to avoid having your drink spiked.
Travel in groups, avoid being alone
Last but certainly not least is traveling with other people and staying in groups. When you are alone, you are an easier target for criminals. So it is best to protect yourself from danger by being around a group of people.
