Traveling is one thing, but traveling alone is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. Stepping outside your comfort zone, trusting your instincts and realizing that you are capable of much more than you thought is enlightening.
But once you’ve finally convinced yourself to take the plunge and commit, the next big deciding factor is: where do you go first?
This can be a big headache when you have the whole world to explore!
According to experts, Japan has been named the best solo travel destination for 2024, so your questions have been answered! In 2023, the country saw an increase in American visitors and is only expected to continue its growth trajectory.
In an effort to further the relationship between the two countries, the Japan Tourism Board announced a “US-Japan Tourism Year 2024” initiative in hopes of promoting tourism and cultural exchange between the two.
Modern skyscrapers, snow-capped Mount Fuji, breathtaking coastal towns: it’s no surprise that Japan is a popular choice for 2024.
Both Tokyo and Osaka are trending for the new year, with searches increasing by more than 200%.
With one of the most efficient transportation systems in the world, Tokyo is a great starting point for solo travelers to explore the country. History buffs will love Osaka’s ornate buildings and cherry blossom-lined streets.
While these two gems are certainly popular among travelers, there are also many other picturesque spots in Japan that solo travelers can explore.
A big draw here is undoubtedly the safety ratings Japan receives every year. It is one of the safest destinations in the world and it is no surprise that it attracts backpackers and solo entrepreneurs.
Most areas and cities are known to be quite safe, but like anywhere, it’s important to stay alert during your travels!
If something happens, you’ll see ‘Kobans’ all over the area – these are essentially ‘police boxes’ used to contact local authorities as quickly as possible.
Another win for the country is their thriving travel and nomad community. Depending on where you stay, dorm rooms can be found between $15 and $30.
For us solo female travelers who don’t feel comfortable sharing accommodations with men, Tokyo has introduced the “women only” concept. Hostels’ – which offer some peace of mind for many ladies.
These capsule hostels are clean, safe, affordable and allow women to feel comfortable during their travels. They range between $20 and 40, which may seem more expensive for a hostel, but if safety and comfort are your priority, then this is the option for you.
Of course, you’ll definitely find a variety of unique experiences to try in Japan – it’s a different country after all, BUT what about unique experiences specifically for solo travelers?
Besides wandering the food markets yourself (which is an experience in itself) or looking for cherry blossoms, there are so many options. According to Flashpack, having lunch with a sumo wrestler and meditating with monks in Kyoto are the top choices for solo travelers. Could you imagine?!
If hotels and hostels aren’t your thing, why not immerse yourself in Japanese tradition?
If you want a taste of normal life, there are many companies that offer homestays to travelers. Most are aimed at students, but if you do a little research there are a few options for others.
With so much to do and new people to meet, the desire for a little relaxation is completely normal. A classic solo experience involves unwinding in one of Japan’s many Hot Pools. Cultural, relaxing and a great way to enjoy yourself alone or meet fellow travelers, these pools can be found all over the country (the most visited is Kurokawa Onsen).
