NThe new York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2024 (NYFW FW24) descended on the vibrant streets of the Big Apple, igniting the first spark in the month-long fashion odyssey. From the vibrant energy of Helmut Lang’s deconstructed cool to the effortless chic of Sandy Liang, the city has served as a runway for innovative minds and established names alike.
Michael Kors set the tone with his aptly titled ‘Timeless’ collection, a love letter to the enduring elegance of the women’s wardrobe. The Barneys New York space, now a silent sentinel of fashion’s past, became the backdrop for Kors’ vision: impeccably tailored double-breasted coats, buttery-soft shearling jackets and pointed pumps that whispered with sophistication. It was a masterclass in essential pieces, each designed to transcend fleeting trends and become beloved companions on a woman’s sartorial journey.
Meanwhile, Tory Burch took us to the hallowed halls of the New York Public Library, where eveningwear took on a whimsical, architectural form. Dresses and jackets, made with innovative heat-welding techniques, had a light, flowing nature that defied their structured silhouettes. Tassels and ruffles danced around sheer minis, while skin-tight hair-to-skin outerwear added a touch of textural intrigue. It was a collection that blurred the lines between day and night – a testament to Burch’s signature blend of modern femininity and playful sophistication.
On the other side of the city, Tommy Hilfiger took us on a ‘New York Moment’ at the iconic Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station. Here, American classics were reimagined with effortless cool. Rugby shirts with voluminous sleeves were reinvented, chinos were relaxed and layering with cardigans and trench coats matched the energy of the city. A pleated midi skirt paired with block heel boots promised wearability, while the shearling biker jacket and oversized tweedy puffa whispered of instant additions to your wishlist. It was a celebration of American style, reinterpreted for the modern woman on the go.
And then the fashion world held its breath. Beyonce herself graced the Luar show in Bushwick and lent her support from Solange son, Julez Smith, on his catwalk debut. Creative director Raul Lopez explored the concept of the metrosexual man and presented a bold vision of masculinity that embraced fashion without sacrificing individuality. Exaggerated Coogi sweaters turned into dresses, oversized and shrunken tailoring pushed boundaries, and the introduction of Luar Basics and a collaboration with Moose Knuckles Canada hinted at exciting possibilities. It was a debut that exceeded expectations and made Luar a brand to watch.
New York Fashion Week set the stage for a season packed with creativity, innovation and a renewed focus on timelessness. As the fashion circuit continues to evolve, one thing is certain: the spirit of New York – bold, diverse and constantly evolving – will continue to inspire and shape the trends of tomorrow.
