After claiming the crown as one of the most visited countries in the world in 2023, it seems nothing can stand in the way of France repeating that feat this year.
This romantic and iconic country is particularly popular with American travelers, according to a recent survey by a luxury tour operator Scott Dunn.
It found that 34% of Americans plan to travel to France in 2024 and there has already been a significant increase in interest and bookings for the country.
So, what are the hottest places to go in the trendiest country in the world for 2024?
I’m sure you can guess one, but here’s the full top 5 to get you in the mood ‘Je ne sais quoi’…
5. The French Riviera
This is the place to go for those who enjoy the finer things in life.
The Côte d’Azur is a picturesque stretch of beautiful coastline that is home to French cinema, with beautiful cities such as Cannes and St. Tropez among its gems.
It is one of the most cultural destinations you can visit in France, with many long-standing festivals and traditions taking place throughout the year.
An example of this can be found in Menton from February 17 to March 3, where a celebration of citrus fruits takes place in the form of the Fete du Citron. This year it will be 90e birthday.
4. Nice
If you want more information about great destinations on the French Riviera, look no further than the region’s capital, Nice.
Close to the border with Italy, this Mediterranean gem is a beautiful place to enjoy a day of sun, sightseeing and evening parties.
The Cours Saleya market is not to be missed, while the Colline du Chateau offers exceptional views over the old town and harbor – it’s a great spot at sunset.
3. The Alps
The French Alps, one of Europe’s most important ski destinations, attract winter sports fans in droves every year.
But it’s also a fantastic place to visit in the summer, with exceptional hiking, fishing and mountain towns where you’ll just want to stay forever.
If you visit in early July, you will see some of the strongest men in the world powering their way through the mountains as part of the world-famous cycling race, the Tour de France.
2. Normandy
This coastal region in northern France is a cultural icon.
From the famous Mont-Saint-Michel to the beautiful stonework of the rural villages famous for cider production – this region is like its own mini-culture within a culture.
It is also the birthplace of Impressionism and 2024 will mark the 150th anniversary of this art style.
A special Norman Impressionist festival will take place throughout the summer to celebrate the work and influence of Edouard Manet and others.
2024 will also be a great year to visit Normandy if you are a history buff.
It’s the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War and there will be a host of events taking place between June 1 and 16 to commemorate it.
1. Paris
It had to be this way, didn’t it? It should surprise no one that 77% of respondents in this report said Paris was in their French travel plans, and why not?
The ‘City of Light’ has more than enough to offer to fill even the most seasoned traveler for a week or two – world-class museums, unparalleled café culture, incredible architecture – it’s hard to know where to start.
Despite all this, many travelers still have a love-hate relationship with Paris, and this year that may not help as prices are expected to rise during the Olympic Games, which will be held in the city from July 26 to August 11.
And if none of these appeal to you?
This research also identified some popular destinations that just didn’t make the top 5, but are definitely worth considering if you’re planning a trip to France.
These include the coastal cultural metropolis of Marseille, the historic capital of the Bordeaux wine region and the region where the world’s favorite bubbles come from: Champagne.
