When spring arrives, it can feel like a world of travel possibilities opens up for you.
Faced with a huge amount of choice as the Northern Hemisphere begins to warm up, where do you look for inspiration? Maybe we have something to help.
As part of the annual Spring Break Travel Outlook report, a major booking platform Expedia.com has revealed which international destinations are the most popular based on user flight searches.
The full list includes some of the usual destinations in North America, but also a few surprising destinations from Europe and Asia.
Here’s where people are hungry to travel this spring:
7. Barcelona, Spain
Located in the most visited region in all of Spain, Barcelona is a city that has few equals in all of Europe.
Spring is one of the best times to visit Barcelona as costs are lower and you also avoid the infamous overcrowding that has plagued the city in recent summers.
March also sees the Barcelona Beer Festival (22-24) and the Sant Medir Festival (3 March), where floats will parade through the streets and free sweets will be handed out.
6. Rome, Italy
Rome is a beautiful and fascinating city that requires a lot of walking if you want to see everything.
This is why spring is a great time to visit, with average temperatures usually hovering around 55F in March and April, so you won’t melt while trying to take it all in.
Compared to a summer average of 80F, it is much more pleasant to see outdoor attractions such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Once popular with American travelers, Punta Cana is an ideal spring hideaway.
With warm and sunny Caribbean weather, stunningly clean and beautiful beaches and a host of excellent all-inclusive hotels, it’s easy to see why.
Every year there seems to be more reasons to consider a visit to Punta Cana, such as a planned new train route connecting it to Santo Domingo, and several new resorts set to open in the coming months.
4. Paris, France
Ahh, Paris in the spring. Will it get even more romantic?
Maybe. But Paris is still a beautiful place to go next season.
This year especially, it can save you money if you visit in the spring, before the inevitable hotel price hike this summer when the Olympics are in town.
The city really comes alive in March and April, with many of the main attractions enhanced by the blooming of beautiful blossoms and other flowers.
And with more and more non-stop flights from the US, this is the sign to consider Paris.
3. London, United Kingdom
If London has been on your bucket list for a while, spring is a great time to tick it off.
The UK capital is consistently among the most visited cities in the world thanks to its huge range of attractions and events – both of which kick up a gear in the spring.
London hosts excellent St. Patrick’s Day celebrations on March 17, while the Spring Festival of Light theme park (until May 8) is a family-friendly attraction near the Brent Cross Shopping Center.
2. Tokyo, Japan
The curveball in this list is the Japanese megacity that seems to be at the top of everyone’s bucket list.
Tripadvisor recently named Tokyo as one of the most popular destinations in 2024 for good reason: people can’t get enough of the idea of Japan.
Spring is the ideal time to visit the island as it gives you the chance to see the famous Sakura cherry blossoms, which bloom from late March to early April.
Head to one of Tokyo’s many gardens or temple complexes to see them in full bloom.
1. Cancun, Mexico
What else can you say about Cancun?
It’s one of the most popular beach destinations in the world for so many reasons – and that list just keeps growing.
Located a stone’s throw from some of the best beaches in the world, with the benefit of an ever-growing range of all-inclusive resorts to choose from, and ease of travel increased with more flights and the introduction of the Mayan Train – how can any self-respecting traveler resist this?
