Europe is home to some of the most stunning destinations in the world.
While Europe certainly doesn’t have a monopoly on flawless island getaways, the options are endless, especially when it comes to Spain.
The Spanish mainland is an endless playground with huge cultural cities to explore and small towns oozing charm and history.
But the Balearic Islands have a completely different atmosphere – all four of them to be precise. This collective group of dreamy vacation destinations is growing in popularity with a almost 27% increase and there’s no better time to prepare for a spring trip before the summer crowds take over.
Ibiza
The name itself is the most famous, from hits to the simple fact that Ibiza is beautiful with crystal clear water.
Although this scenic island is on our own list of places not to visit this year, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a hit with travelers.
Before 2023 it was one of the most visited islands in the Balearic Islands, as flights are available in abundance for those looking for a mix of blissful beach holidays and world-famous nightlife.
That’s where Ibiza gets tricky though. This island knows how to party, so if that’s not your thing then one of the other 3 islands might be more your thing.
Although a sunset cruise makes for a nice escape from the fist-pumping crowds.
Formentera
This chilled paradise, the smallest of the Balearic Islands, is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the typical Ibiza tourist.
Formentera is the type of holiday destination to relax and unwind, surrounded by beautiful scenery, especially the beaches.
Holidaymakers all along the coast rave about the vast stretches of unspoilt beaches with plenty of activities including snorkelling and private boat hire.
Some travelers take a day trip from Formentara, but others like to spend more time in vacation mode, as the pristine, tranquil island falls somewhere between “hidden gem” status and “locals’ favorite.”
The nightlife isn’t quite on par with that of Ibiza, but some prefer the quiet atmosphere with more space to move around than the crowded bars of the neighboring island just 30 minutes away.
Minorca
Less flashy and less cluttered, Menorca is the perfect escape to go more off-path and avoid the chaos of other popular destinations.
Menorca is more than just a day trip, although it can be reached in just an hour by plane from major hubs like Barcelona.
Unless you want to take the adventurous route with a ferry ride of at least 5 hours. However you get here, you’ll be glad you chose Menorca as your favorite holiday destination.
This Spanish beauty is much less party-oriented than Ibiza and much bigger than Formentera, but still just as beautiful and worth a visit.
The white-sand beaches are postcard-worthy and it’s relatively easy to find secluded beaches away from fellow tourists, especially in spring.
Summer may be a different story. Your journey will be even better when you level up at a fantastic 5-star resort, like the Lagos Resort Menorca at very affordable prices or the divine Faustino Gran Relais & Castles.
Mallorca
This grand island between Menorca and Ibiza is perhaps the largest playground for holidaymakers who love a mix of nature, delicious food and cultural cities.
Mallorca meets all three criteria and happens to be one of the easiest islands to get to. Often overshadowed by the iconic cities of mainland Spain, this beautiful island is anchored by the highly underrated city of Palma.
Worth a trip in itself just to witness the Catedral de Mallorca – also known as La Seu.
In addition to the phenomenal architecture and winding cobblestone streets, the island is home to incredibly peaceful beaches, beautiful wineries, picturesque landscapes and secluded coves to complete the ultimate island getaway.
Whatever piques your interest, Mallorca has it all, and it’s no surprise why this island has risen in popularity along with the rest.
