First and foremost, Sargassum has not yet reached the beaches of Cancun.
The Wells and Beaches Directorate has been monitoring the beaches of Cancun since 6am this morning, Now that the sargassum season is just around the corner, said Antonio Chambé, director of this organization.
“The brigades continue to work manually and Zofemat has the mechanical sweeper to help us,” Chambé said.
He emphasized that the sargassum season has not yet reached the shores of Cancun and explained that what has been seen in recent weeks is seagrass, which is also being removed so that the beaches look free of any organic matter.
“Some media claimed it was Sargassum, but in reality that was not the case. Sargassum has not hit or reached us yet. There have been some comments at national and international levels that a sargassum patch is heading to Cancun, but as we have always said, this is a natural phenomenon that has no schedule, and we must wait for its natural arrival before we can begin to collect them. .”
Chambé also explained that, based on Marinos’ initial reports, it will most likely arrive between mid-March and early April.
“The season starts when the wind starts to change. So far, the cold fronts are continuing. At the Ministry of Public Services, we are prepared for its arrival as every year,” he said.
Currently 180 people are in charge of cleaning the public beaches, but if necessary Another 200 people from various municipal departments will be seconded to tackle the sargasso.
“We will strengthen the task with another 200 people. That will happen in mid-March and early April, when sargassum starts washing ashore. Last year it was February 6 when sargassum first arrived,” he said.
