It’s easy to understand why Europe has always been (and probably will remain) one of the first places that comes to mind when you think about where you would want to live and work if given the choice.
The overall quality of life is noticeably higher than what you would find in most places in the world, the culture is captivating and the views are incredible.
However, when you’re going to a place as stunningly diverse and unknown as Europe (at least for most of us), it’s always important to do your due diligence beforehand.
Fortunately for you, Click Slice has already done research into this and rated several European destinations based on factors such as internet connectivity, cost of living and number of sunny days.
And while the rankings included many of the destinations you’d expect, such as Lisbon and Athens, there was one surprising Spanish island that took the number 1 spot:
A sunny oasis
One of the most beautiful destinations of the famous Canary Islands archipelago, Gran Canaria is the ultimate sunny oasis, with more than 320 days of sunshine per year.
This shows that the island’s reputation as the “Island of Eternal Spring” is much more than just a marketing slogan; it’s a reality that makes anyone who experiences it for the first time feel like they’ve hit the jackpot!
When you combine the balmy weather (71°F or 21°F) with the black lava and white sand beaches, you get a place unlike anything even the most seasoned travelers have seen in their lives – and well worth it is to explore.
Plenty to see and do
While almost everyone would love to sit all day and enjoy the breathtaking views of Gran Canaria, the island has more to offer travelers and part-time residents than just beautiful sights.
The regional capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is not only a colorful center that comes alive with the many exciting events taking place throughout the year (more on this below), but also home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe – Las Canteras – so beach lovers, take notes.
If you are more interested in the fun events I mentioned, you will be happy to know that the famous Carnival, which usually takes place in February, still takes place in Maspalomas (March 7 – 17).

Fast network and sufficient coworking spaces
If there’s one thing all remote workers can appreciate, it’s a good internet connection and a place where you can be your most productive self – and Gran Canaria offers all that, in addition to the surreal views and paradise beaches.
Not only is the average internet speed in the region 200 MBPS, but places like Hashtag WorkSpace, Coworking Canary Islands, and Soppa de Azul are also highly rated and ready to provide any digital nomad with a fun, productive place to work.
A destination with great value
I’ll say right away that Gran Canaria was one of the more expensive places to make ClikSlice’s rankings; Overall, though, what you pay is still pretty reasonable considering what you get in return.
According to Numbeoa three-course meal for two people in an average restaurant costs only about $43.8, a 1.5 liter bottle of water costs $1.02, and a 500 ml glass of house beer doesn’t even break the $0.99 mark.
The rent may be a little more expensive than what you would find in other places in the region, but still quite reasonable.
A one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs around $766 per month, while those willing to venture further into the suburbs can pay around $615 for a comparable place.
Before I go, I wanted to let you know that too Skyscanner estimate that April is one of the cheapest months to fly from the US to Gran Canaria, so if you want to make a quick trip there first to see if the place meets your criteria, now is the best time to book those tickets .
