Are you also impatiently looking forward to the summer season and endless days at the beach? It’s still nowhere to be seen. But a great way to make the wait time feel shorter is to go somewhere warm.
With beautiful weather all year round, the Caribbean is a great destination. However, there is one thing to consider. The infamous sargassum season is coming and popular hotspots like Cancun, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic may not be the best choice.
The following islands usually have very little to no seaweed, so you can spend your holiday in paradise worry-free and exactly as you dreamed.
Bonaire
Located in the shadow of Curaçao, Bonaire is one of the hidden gems of the Caribbean. It features pristine beaches, beautiful natural landscapes and a relaxing atmosphere. It is also home to spectacular coral reefs, many of which are accessible directly from the coast.
Although it is considered one of the best snorkeling and diving locations in the world, it remains virtually crowd-free. Therefore, it is the perfect retreat for travelers purposefully seeking a quieter location.
Life is very slow, even in the capital Kralendijk. Stroll through the colorful streets, taste local dishes or buy souvenirs. This charming town is worth a visit, but one day is enough to explore it.
Bonaire occasionally gets seaweed. But it is never as serious as on the other Caribbean islands and usually only occurs on the east coast.
Antigua and Barbuda
Have you heard of Antigua and Barbuda? The two-island nation should not be left off anyone’s bucket list, and we’ll tell you why.
First things first. It offers excellent weather conditions, beautiful beaches and turquoise waters, which in themselves create a phenomenal retreat. It is also home to a range of luxury resorts and boutique hotels where you can truly relax and recharge.
There is also no shortage of things to see and do. One of the most popular activities in Antigua and Barbuda is sailing. It enjoys steady trade winds and along its coastline you will find numerous protected harbors that attract sailing enthusiasts from all over the world.
For history buffs, there are plenty of sights to explore, such as Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbor or Betty’s Hope Sugar Plantation, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In addition, many beaches in Antigua and Barbuda often run out of sargassum, especially in early spring. A great holiday is therefore guaranteed if you come in April.
Grenada
Often called the ‘Spice Island’, Grenada is a picturesque little island covered in fragrant spice plantations, mystical rainforests and beautiful white sandy beaches. This allows visitors to enjoy numerous activities.
Reconnect with nature while hiking and birdwatching Grand Etang National Park, Annandale Falls or the Seven Sisters Falls. If you are interested in the island’s colonial past, don’t miss Fort George, Fort Frederick, and the Grenada National Museum.
Or just sunbathe, enjoy delicious cocktails and relax on the beach. If you visit in April, the shores should be free of seaweed and the water therefore perfectly clear for diving and snorkeling.
Grenada has also developed into a chocolate destination in recent years. Take a tour of one of the cocoa plantations and learn about chocolate production in a chocolate factory. Or simply enjoy the finished product at a local boutique.
Aruba
Would you rather have an active holiday than laze around? With so many activities to offer, Aruba is a fantastic island to visit.
Stable trade winds are perfect conditions for various water sports, such as windsurfing, sailing or kitesurfing. On the other hand, there are excellent diving opportunities on the sheltered southwestern coastline.
You can also hop on an outdoor adventure. How about walking inside Arikok National Parkhorse riding or canoeing?
Another thing that makes Aruba stand out is its nightlife. The best events can be found in Oranjestad – the lively capital of Aruba. Whether you like wild parties, live music, casinos or cozy pubs, this island has something for everyone.
Moreover, Aruba rarely gets seaweed. And if it does, it’s usually not a big deal, so you can enjoy the beaches and all the fun that comes with them without any hassle. Oh, and don’t forget to visit the flamboyant flamingos at Flamingo Beach.
