Another weekend, another fashionable awards ceremony on the red carpet. Last night, the 55th annual NAACP Image Awards were held in Los Angeles, honoring Black artists in film, television and music. The awards ceremony, hosted by Queen Latifah and broadcast live on BET, featured a who’s who of Hollywood: Oprah, Kerry Washington, Usher and Keke Palmer were all there; So were Quinta Brunson, Idris Elba, Taraji P. Henson and Damson Idris.
The evening of celebration included a performance by Adra Day and New Edition’s induction into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. On the awards front, “The Color Purple” emerged as the night’s big winner, with Fantasia Barrino taking home the trophy for Best Actress; Henson and award winner Colman Domingo win for their supporting roles; and the film with Outstanding Motion Picture. Following his hugely successful Las Vegas residency and unforgettable Super Bowl LVIII halftime show, Usher was named Entertainer of the Year. The artist also took home the President’s Award for years of public service through his New Look foundation aimed at uplifting underserved youth.
Fashion was also central. Veteran stylist June Ambrose – wearing a dramatic floral Bibhu Mohapatra gown – was honored with the Vanguard Award, and Queen Latifah led the ceremony in several looks styled by Jason Rembert, including a royal Harbison Studio gown and an Oscar de La Renta dress. The carpet saw a mix of famous houses (Yara Shahidi in Ferragamo) and emerging, independent labels (India Amarteifio in Tolu Coker). Translation: this was our kind of night. Ahead, the best looks from the 2024 NAACP Image Awards.
