In terms of safety record, Mexico is mixed depending on who you ask.
However, every trip abroad carries risks as we leave our comfort zone, away from home.
Mexico has long struggled with mainstream news, as every act of violence or serious transgression seems to make headlines and leave the impression that all of Mexico is dangerous.
Despite the media’s best efforts, 99.9% of travelers who have been to Mexico certainly disagree, as the beautiful country is teeming with hospitable locals, vast cultural cities, beautiful pueblo magicos and of course incredible beaches and resorts .
That said, there are always ‘bad apples’ who can change the story, and there are always a handful of tourists who push the boundaries.
So, what does the US State Department think with their information?
Ranging from Level 1 to Level 4 to determine the safety levels, the government agency issued travel advice for every state in Mexico.
These are the 7 safest beach destinations according to the US Department of State:
Campeche
Surprisingly, the coastal city of Campeche is popular with travelers this year, and one of the main reasons why it has become a big hit is that it is one of the safest cities in Mexico.
Besides the safety aspect, next in line for the ‘trendiest’ title would be the highly anticipated Maya Train.
Campeche is one of the stops and travelers love it! A mix of captivating cultural attractions, affordability and beautiful beaches along the Gulf of Mexico are attracting tourists this year.
There are only 2 states designated in Mexico Level 1: Practice normal precautions and Campeche is proud to be part of this exclusive club.
Yucatan
The only other permanent member of the club is the state of Yucatán.
Super safe, beautiful, and with plenty of historic sites like Chichen Itza, travelers can’t go wrong when visiting this side of Mexico.
And while Merida isn’t a beach town per se, it’s still close enough as this increasingly popular city is a great gateway to the coast.
Proudly titled ‘safest city in Mexico‘, Merida is perfect for those who want to enter Mexico if they have any hesitation about tourist safety.
Choosing between Playa Norte, Sisel and Progreso to spend your beach days is a coin toss, but an unsuspecting beach it is Yucatán’s best kept secret.
Quintana Roe
Now on to Level 2 – Quintana Roo is home to the most popular beach vacation hotspots in Mexico. The best of the best is of course the iconic beach city of Cancun.
A basic product for holidaymakers for decades, Cancun is always reliablealways safe for tourists, and ticks all the boxes for a dreamy getaway.
Take into account the surrounding trendy beach destinations, such as Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and there may not be a better place in Mexico to find your niche.
As the Mayan Train continues to expand its operations, the region is more accessible than ever before!
Baja California Sur
Just the word “Baja” seems to evoke instant bliss, knowing that places like Los Cabos exist for us to escape to.
The southernmost point of Baja is located Mexico’s most luxurious beach destination, Los Cabos. Lined with picture-perfect resorts with all the all-inclusive amenities you could want, it just doesn’t get much better.
And as party-oriented as Cabo is, the mega-popular vacation spot remains safe for tourists.
Los Cabos is the biggest draw for southern Baja, but quiet coastal towns like La Paz and beautiful small beach towns like Todos Santos are also making a name for themselves.
Oaxaca
Oaxaca is a hugely cultural city and state of the same name, but the state’s beaches are where the natural beauty shines.
Both the city and the beaches are important hubs for digital nomads.
The coastal city Puerto Escondido has skyrocketed in popularity with remote workers, which speaks volumes, as digital nomads aren’t exactly looking for unsafe places to call home.
The state of Oaxaca is breathtaking and you can’t go wrong visiting Puerto Escondido, Huatulco or the smaller, lesser-known gems along the coast.
Veracruz
Veracruz is a good example of why Mexico should be given more opportunity to prove the mainstream news wrong.
In fact, the city is well on its way to doing so, as the port city has skyrocketed in popularity. Despite some minor inconveniences, Veracruz is very safe for tourists.
Tourists love exploring the centuries-old streets full of colonial architecture, but Veracruz also has beautiful beaches within easy reach.
About 20 minutes away are miles of sandy beaches along the Costa Esmerelda, including picturesque islands you can visit just off the coast.
Nayarit
Nayarit state is home to a 320-kilometer coastline that has captured the attention of beach lovers.
If one of the trendiest destinations in Mexico this yearSeemingly endless beaches are clearly a big reason for that.
Safety also plays a big factor.
Although Puerto Vallarta is technically in the state of Jalisco, given its popularity and close proximity to Nayarit, it’s fair to add this mega-popular beach city to the equation as one of the safest in Mexico.
