“It’s never really the goal, let’s be honest,” says Gisele Bündchen when asked about her favorite things in her Miami, Florida, home. “It’s something emotional.” The supermodel values the works of art her children have given her more than pieces from established galleries. ‘It has its energy. I love that,” she says of a pot made by her daughter Vivian, before pulling out a drawing by her son Benjamin. “He’s an incredible artist,” she says. “I’m so proud of him.â€
She moved to this house only a year and a half ago, but the family has already settled down. There are animals everywhere, including a stable of horses – Vivian has one called Idem, while Gisele rides another called Alfie – as well as a particularly affable German shepherd. “It feels like Brazil: I love how warm the people are,” she says of Miami.
Bündchen also revisits her first American Fashion cover. “It was a very special day. We were in the park in New York, it was Steven Meisel,” she says of the July 1999 issue, which coincidentally came out on the day of her 19th birthday.
It was also the end of something: heroin chic. While wafer-thin models appeared on the catwalk in the 1990s, Bündchen marked a paradigm shift towards curves and athleticism. “It was a very important moment,” she says. “It was kind of the beginning of a new era in fashion,” she says.
She also brings Fashion to her kitchen to prepare homemade granola. Bündchen’s cookbook, To feed, was recently published by Clarkson Potter. It focuses on creating healthy recipes and embracing a healthy mindset: Bündchen encourages the reader to focus on gratitude. “It’s such a gift, such an honor for us to have and receive food,” she says. “Food is what sustains our lives.”
