Much has been written about dreamy remote destinations that will take the world by storm this summer, but little has been said about the beautiful, if unconventional, hotspots here in the United States that promise the vacation of a lifetime.
Therefore Men’s magazine set out to find the best summer vacation destinations you can visit without ever leaving the country, and to say the findings were surprising would be an understatement.
Because while most of us expected classic summer hotspots like Miami, Myrtle Beach or New York to top the list, six much underrated cities dominated the rankings instead.
Spokane, WA
Spokane is affectionately called “Lilac City” by locals and is by far one of the best cities to visit if you don’t want to compromise between adventure opportunities and traditional city charm.
If you’re put off by the idea of a sedentary holiday where you just sit all day, then this is the perfect destination for you.
With its beautiful Riverfront Park (home of Spokane Falls), Centennial Trail, and an endless array of galleries, theaters, and music venues, Washington’s gem promises a summer to remember.
Duluth, MN
For those of you looking to explore places further into the heart of the country, Duluth is one of the most underrated gems you’ll come across.
Once again, this is a town that caters primarily to adventurous souls, with its miles of rugged landscapes and the iconic Superior Hiking Trail, which offers the most awe-inspiring views of the lake and surrounding forests.
And if you don’t feel like going for a walk, a relaxing bike ride along the North Shore Scenic Drive (which, trust me, lives up to its name) might be the summer experience you’ve been looking for.
Marquette, MI
With a population of just over 20,000, it’s officially the smallest city on the list, but what Marquette lacks in fame or size it more than makes up for in breathtaking, pristine views.
This charming Michigan gem is actually the closest we’ll get to a more typical summer vacation today.
With a rugged coastline full of picturesque beaches, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to swim, paddle board, kayak and do anything else that requires calm waters and summer temperatures.
However, hikers don’t have to worry either.
Nearby Presque Isle Park promises miles of scenic hiking trails and panoramic lake views just waiting to be explored.
Juneau, AK
If you want to enjoy a truly alternative summer vacation this year, exploring the mountainous wonders of Alaska’s capital might be just what you need.
Surrounded by towering peaks and pristine fjords, Juneau looks like something straight out of a fairy tale, and while summer temperatures are clearly nowhere near what they are in most of the country, they are mild enough to go hiking, glacier trekking and wildlife spotting without freezing – so if you’ve ever been tempted to explore Alaska, this summer might be the best time to finally do so.
Madison, WI
Famously situated between two scenic lakes, Madison is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a relaxing, rejuvenating getaway.
Don’t get me wrong – you’ll still have plenty to do, from walking and picnicking to exploring the city’s vibrant downtown and beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol – but there’s just a laid-back, unpretentious vibe to Madison that makes vacationing here so special. fun makes it feel like something you’ve been waiting for all your life.
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Finishing strong with the largest and perhaps most famous city of the bunch, Minneapolis welcomes travelers this summer to explore the iconic Chain of Lakes (along with many other beautiful natural sights) and fascinating culture.
If you’re looking for a good city trip, this is the best choice.
Between admiring the pieces at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and attending live performances at the historic Guthrie Theater, you’ll get the chance to get in touch with your art-loving side without having to sacrifice more adventurous experiences—what, let’s say We’re honest, it’s what most of us prioritize during our summer trips.
