Americans don’t have to worry about that anymore obtaining a tourist visa to enter Brazil at least until April 10, 2025, according to a new decree issued by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Until 2019, Americans required a visa to enter Brazilian territory. Things changed for Americans when right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro came to power, but with the new left-wing president things will change again.
The reason behind this decision is that the United States does not offer “reciprocity,” meaning it also requires Brazilians to apply for a U.S. visa to enter the U.S., the Brazilian government said in a press release.
Starting today, US citizens must complete a form known as e-Visa for Brazil when you travel for tourist purposes. It costs $80.90, is valid for ten years and allows Americans to stay in the country for up to 90 days per year.
New visa requirements in 2025
The new visa rules do not only have consequences Americans but also Canadian And Australian passport holders.
Once it’s available, it allows Americans access to Brazil for 10 years and Canadians and Australians for 5 years and 90 days a year. The fee remains $80.90 and “qualified applicants” will also have the option to apply for an e-visa.
Only those arriving in Brazil via cruise ships can apply for e-visas.
The processing time should not take longer than five working days but the company responsible for the applications strongly recommends starting the process with two months of anticipation.
Probably the most controversial aspect of the new requirements is that applicants must share their bank statements with the Brazilian government to obtain this new visa.
As reported by CNN, Travelers must provide proof of their last three bank statements or their last six pay stubs showing that they have at least $2,000. If you don’t have such an amount, you can get a ‘sponsor’ who can show his bank statements and money instead of you.
Other requirements Involving a statement of intent in which you explain the Brazilian government in detail when you are visiting, why you are visiting and for how many days. You will also be asked to provide proof of your return tickets and a document proving your residence in the United States.
It may sound difficult, but for Brazilians it is even more difficult.
