Texas is one of the most attractive states for tourism in the US. And that doesn’t surprise us. It has a rich historical and cultural heritage and is home to many urban centers, such as Houston, Austin and Dallas. It also boasts incredible nature and cuisine. And is known for its exceptional hospitality and friendly people.
For that reason it can get quite busy – and no one wants to spend their holiday in crowds or queues. If you’re looking for a place off the beaten track, you’ve come to the right place. In this article you will find the 7 Incredible Hidden Gems in Texas to Visit in 2024.
Stonehenge II, Ingram
You’ve probably heard of Stonehenge. But have you heard of the Texas Stonehenge? Located near San Antonio, this replica of the iconic stone formation was built as an art project. It shows what English Stonehenge would have looked like without erosion and weather influences.
Owned and operated by the Hill Country Arts Foundation, it hosts numerous events throughout the year, including workshops and theater performances. Nearby you will also find moai heads from Easter Island. Come check it out if you’re driving to or from San Antonio. You can grab a cup of coffee in the parking lot to refuel.
Hamilton Pool, dripping springs
Summer is just around the corner, but you’re already feeling too hot? There is no better way to cool off than in a natural pool with emerald green water. Hamilton Pool Preserve is a historic swimming hole just outside of Austin. It features a 15 meter high waterfall and is also home to several native bird species, fish and plants.
Please note that you must make a reservation if you want to visit Hamilton Pool. Also check in advance if swimming is allowed on the day of your visit, as this changes based on current conditions.
Terlingua Ghosttown
Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch National Park, Terlingua is one of the most famous ghost towns in Texas. It was a mining town in the early twentieth century. But once the mine was dry, everyone left.
Nowadays you can wander through the deserted streets (if we can call it that). It has a truly unique atmosphere and makes you feel like you are in a western movie.
If you’re afraid of encountering a real ghost in Terlingua, don’t be. Chances are you’ll meet other visitors and even have a drink with them in the salon-like Starlight Theater. You can also visit an art gallery or buy souvenirs at The Terlingua Trading Company gift shop.
The Blue Lagoon, Huntsville
This hidden gem is just a short drive north of Huntsville. The name says it all: it is a crystal clear lagoon whose color is reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea. It’s perfect for cooling off on a hot day or just relaxing on the banks near the trees.
Because it is owned by a diving school, you have to pay admission. However, you will be rewarded with a clean environment and fewer people, unlike comparable natural pools. Plus, you can get there within an hour from Houston, making it a great place for a one-day getaway to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Boca Chica Beach
Texas also has beautiful beaches. And at the southernmost point of the state is one that many seem to forget: Boca Chica Beach. It’s spacious, clean and usually not crowded. It is also home to the SpaceX rocket which you can see up close. If you walk to the end of the beach you can even catch a glimpse of Mexico and the Rio Grande.
The only thing this beach lacks are modern facilities. So bring your food, drinks and sunscreen. You can park on the beach. We recommend driving a 4×4 so you don’t get stuck in the sand.
San Jose Island
If you love the beach, we have another tip for you. It is not far from Corpus Christi San Jose Island. It features more than 34 miles of sand and is home to several fish and bird species. You can also find many unique shells such as shark eyes, sand dollars or angel wings.
To get there, you’ll need to take a short ferry ride from Port Aransas. Then you can enjoy everything the island has to offer, including bird watching, fishing and beachcombing. And you can end your day in Port Aransas with a nice dinner and a little shopping.
Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo
Do you like art? Then you should definitely not miss Cadillac Ranch. This art installation features a row of Cadillacs buried nose first in the ground and, according to the author, is a monument to the famous American dream. We leave the rest to your imagination.
The best part? It’s free and while the Cadillacs are already colorful enough, you can unleash your inner artist and paint them to your own taste. Since it’s located along Interstate 40, it’s a great stop if you’re on a road trip.
