Warm, sunny weather, sparkling azure seas, picturesque hilltop towns with delicious food and culture – these are just some of the things most of us imagine when we imagine the perfect summer holiday.
There are plenty of places to get these things, but one in particular stands out as the perfect summer destination…
Italy’s Amalfi Coast was recently voted the best summer holiday destination in the world US News and World Report, and to be honest, it’s hard for us to disagree.
This is why Amalfi has everything for summer travel enthusiasts:
A glitzy summer dreamland
Gleaming white buildings with typical Mediterranean red roofs and graceful church towers dotted across the lush green hills – this and much more can be found along the Amalfi Coast.
It’s a star-studded place that’s ideal for a road trip, a boating holiday or simply a trip for those who enjoy the finer things in life, with luxury hotels and restaurants everywhere.
The area is known for sfusato lemon, ancient cathedrals and some of Italy’s best beaches.
Flying to Amalfi becomes easier thanks to a new airport
Reaching this picture-perfect corner of Italy will soon be easier than ever after it was announced that the region is opening a new airport.
Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport, located about 21 kilometers southeast of Salerno, has almost completed quite a major renovation project and will open for commercial flights in July, if all goes according to plan.
However, the old way is still a great way – and by that I mean flying into Naples and taking in the sights and sounds of that historic city and the achingly beautiful Mount Vesuvius on the way to Amalfi.
Adding Amalfi to a longer trip is easy
One of the best things about Italy for travelers is the country’s efficient and relatively affordable high-speed train network the Frecciabianca.
These trains connect the cities of Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples with the Amalfi city of Salerno. And they do it in a hurry, with top speeds of more than 350 kilometers per hour!
To give you an example of how great these trains are, a one-way ticket from Rome to Salerno costs just $26 and takes just 90 minutes non-stop.
Italy is a dream destination
There are many reasons why Italy will always remain a hugely popular destination for American travelers – it has a little bit of everything to please everyone.
From its ancient history to its stimulating culture, Italy manages to get under the skin of almost everyone who visits the country.
Last year, travelers visited the country in record numbers and we expect this trend to continue well into 2024.
Hiking and outdoors
While you might imagine the Amalfi Coast as a place to kick back, relax and enjoy a slower pace of life (it certainly is), the area also has something for those who prefer to be more active.
This coastline is rich in walking routes, many of which offer spectacular views over the steep cliffs to the sparkling ocean below.
One of the best known is the ‘Path of the Gods’, a journey from Nocelle to Bomerano of only six kilometers and certainly one of the most beautiful in this part of Italy.
A paradise for water lovers
This slice of paradise is best enjoyed from the water – whether that’s on a day trip, a boat trip, a charter cruise or even a kayak.
The Amalfi Coast has some of the best water activities in the world, including the chance to take part in swimming, snorkeling and diving on the coast.
Luxury for less (sometimes)
There is no denying that the Amalfi Coast is an extremely popular and therefore quite expensive area to visit.
That said, it is possible to keep costs from spiraling out of control if you are smart and judicious with your spending.
One of the best things you can do is book early – you can get a hotel room for a reasonable price in the summer if you book it well in advance (it’s best to avoid Airbnb as they get a bit weird in terms of price ).
You can also save a fair amount of money by ditching the rental car and using the affordable buses in the area, many of which also serve Naples.
