If you’re looking forward to a warm, dreamy getaway this May, I have good news for you: traveling to four of the most stunning Latin American destinations has never been cheaper (or easier).
Not only are airfares to these beautiful cities at an annual low, but the weather is fantastic and the crowds have subsided somewhat since the winter peak – in short, there’s no better time to finally pull the trigger on that much-needed sunny escape.
At least, that’s what we discovered thanks to Kayak’s data-backed “Best time to travel” tool.
And below you’ll find out exactly why those of you planning to go somewhere amazing in the next month should put Tulum, Sao Paolo, Bogota and Santiago at the top of your bucket list.
Tulum
If there’s one destination that’s become infinitely cheaper and easier to visit, it’s Tulum, and that’s thanks to the recently opened Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport, which is easily accessible from many US hubs (check out these articles 1 ,2,3 to see if your city is one of them).
In May, round-trip flights start from just $234, and tickets will generally be at (or near) their annual lowest price, so if you want to get the best possible value from your Tulum trip, you’ll have to book those tickets soon .
And with temperatures averaging around 27-32°C (80-90°F) over the next month, you can do just about anything you want – from long sunbathes at Playa Paraíso to fascinating excursions around the local Mayan ruins.
Sao Paulo
When most of us think about a trip to Brazil, our minds immediately go to long (9+ hours), expensive flights that seem completely out of reach.
And while the “long” part is still true, I’m here to tell you that as long as you plan your visit right and are willing to do it without any fancy extra amenities on board, you can travel from the US to Sao. Paolo and back for just over $400 – not nearly as bad as what you could have, right?
However, the best thing about visiting Sao Paolo in May is the fact that you can actually get the best of both worlds: pleasant temperatures of 15-23°C (59-73°F) and peaceful attractions to visit. actually experience it without having to fight hordes of impatient tourists.
Bogota
If flights around $400 or even $200 aren’t in your budget, don’t worry: you can travel to one of Latin America’s most fascinating destinations and back for just $155.
Colombia’s beautiful capital also happens to be one of the cheapest tourist centers in South America (at least compared to similar cities), with accommodation prices ranging between $22 and $44 per night, so if keeping your travels frugal is a key priority , this can be a good option. your perfect choice.
However, keep in mind that temperatures in the city this time of year are on the cooler side, between 10°C (50°F) and 19°C (66°F), which while perfect for long sightseeing excursions, but ‘Not particularly ideal for people who want to get into the summer atmosphere.
Santiago
Both Kayak and Skyscanner have named May as the cheapest time to travel from the US to Santiago, and when you see the discounts you’ll get if you reschedule your trip next month, you’ll want to book those tickets ASAP.
Round-trip flights start at $299 – these are the exact same tickets that would sell for more than $615 during the peak months (which Kayak says are December and March).
And if it is impossible for you to put together a trip to Chile on such short notice, then June is actually the second best time to travel to Santiago, which gives you some extra time, but with two disadvantages: the weather will be cooler and it will become about 10% more expensive to fly.
I would also like to note that even in May, temperatures in Santiago are not particularly warm, as it is late fall in the country at this time of year (think range of 46-64°F) – so sun worshipers, keep take that into account.
