Home to some of the world’s most popular travel destinations, Europe has always found a place on our travel bucket lists, and by ‘always’ I really mean that ever since leisure travel became a thing, the continent’s beautiful hubs have been coveted by millions of people .
However, at this point, the number of people moving to these cities has become so enormous that it is beginning to negatively impact not only the overall traveler experience, but also the lives of locals who face all the economic and environmental challenges of mass tourism.
In the past few months alone, there has been major pushback in countries like France, Greece, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands in an effort to alleviate overtourism and maintain a sense of authenticity.
Between that and the fact that going somewhere at the exact same time as millions of other people can also hinder your enjoyment, travelers in 2024 are increasingly drawn to smaller, lesser-known destinations – but how do you find them?
To help you, European best destinations has just released its latest ranking of Europe’s top hidden gems, and the list, while unexpected, is guaranteed to provide you with some much-needed inspiration.
5. Ngaatli, Finland
Located 14 kilometers west of Turku, this charming Finnish seaside town has everything you hope for and more: it has everything from a sweet old town and colorful wooden houses to a lively yet intimate harbor filled with fishing boats.
Ngaatli is also home to the famous Kultaranta estate, the official summer residence of the country’s president and a must-see for anyone who wants to admire the local architecture, marvel at the panoramic views or simply enjoy a refreshing walk along the scenic trails.
Please note that this is a very quiet town.
For example, specialty stores such as souvenir shops are usually unique and close their doors at 4 p.m., so try to get all your shopping done before then.
4. Bokodi Floating Village, Hungary
Few people actually understand how fairytale-like the Hungarian countryside can be, and this criminally underrated village is the perfect example of that.
Right above the tranquil waters of Lake Bokodi you’ll find a handful of colorful wooden houses built on stilts, giving the illusion that the whole place is – you guessed it – floating.
But before you pack your bags, I would like to point out that this is quite a remote place and you can only admire the houses from afar; after all, they are private property.
But the views at sunrise are so dreamy and surreal that, in my opinion, it’s still worth coming here.
3. Primosten, Croatia
If you’ve been wanting to explore Croatia for a while, but don’t fancy the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik, Primosten might be the perfect place for you.
Do not worry; you can still lounge on the powdery sands of the Dalmatian coast and swim in the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea – you can do it all in a much quieter and more private place.
And with all the stone houses, medieval churches and winding cobbled streets, the old-world charm here is extra strong.
2. Ares del Maestre, Spain
Despite what most of us are led to believe, Spain has a lot more to offer than just dreamy beaches, and this rugged hilltop town is just the perfect example of that.
History buffs in particular will find Ares del Maestre their refuge.
Home to old stone houses and an iconic 13th-century castle, the town really makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time.4
1. Villajoyosa, Spain
Coming first is another Spanish gem, but this time you can enjoy that quintessential beach experience.
Located on the sun-drenched shores of the Costa Blanca, Villahoyosa is exactly what you would imagine when you hear about a tranquil seaside resort.
All the colorful houses on the coast, the palm-lined promenades, sandy beaches and the cheap but delicious food make you feel like you are living in your own summer paradise.
